Enrollment in the Business Administration major and minor program is limited and by application only. Our students typically spend two years in the General College at UNC-Chapel Hill (or in an equivalent core program of academic study elsewhere) and subsequent years under the administration of UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School.
The Undergraduate Business Program (UBP) requires that you earn a C (not C-) or better in your prerequisite coursework. After you have completed the prerequisite requirements and have been accepted to the UBP, you enter and continue throughout the program as a full-time degree-seeking student.
To remain in good standing at UNC Kenan-Flagler, you are required to maintain full-time degree-seeking status and UNC academic eligibility standards. If you fail to meet these standard, you will automatically be placed on academic probation. At the end of one full semester of academic probation, if you have been unsuccessful in demonstrating eligibility progress, you will be declared ineligible to continue in the UBP and demoted from the major.
UNC students who enter as first-year students are expected to complete their undergraduate degree in eight semesters of full-time enrollment, excluding summer terms.
After you are admitted to the UBP, you generally have four semesters to fulfill your degree requirements. We expect majors to average a 15-hour load per semester. A normal schedule consists of five, three-credit courses. Please consult with a UBP academic advisor about course loads that vary from the expected 15 hours. On occasion, academic schedules could warrant an overload or underload. View credit overload and credit underload sections for more details.
The UBP student government created the UBP Code of Conduct in 2009 as an extension of the School’s core values and part of our students’ commitment to preserve and enhance the most important aspects of our UBP culture. The UBP Code of Conduct also states the expectations the UBP Office has for all of our students.
After being admitted to the UBP, every student is required to review, accept and adhere to Code of Conduct as part of the program and wider School community.
If you are active business major or minor (matriculated in the program via Connect Carolina), you have access to our UBP advisors (login required, KFusername@business.unc.edu). You may schedule a 30-minute advising appointment online or attend drop-in hours for quick questions (fewer than 10 minutes).
If you are a business minor, an advisor in the College of Arts & Sciences corresponding with your declared major has been assigned to you. Forms, requests and graduation clearances will be managed through your primary major school/college.
If you have been admitted to the Business School for a future term, you will continue to go to the College of Arts & Sciences for all academic matters until your admission term to the UBP.
Course attendance policy for approved absences is dictated at the University level. After communicating with your professor about an approved absence, if determined necessary, a student may submit a request for a University Approved Absence.
Course attendance policy for unapproved absences is at the discretion of your professor and is noted in the course syllabus.
Missing courses and exams for interviews are deemed unapproved absences. We strongly advise you to schedule job and internship interviews around your class times and exam schedules. Employers understand that academics are your top priority.
For off-campus interviews at the employer’s site, most will accommodate your need to schedule an interview around a class or exam. For on-campus interviews, sign up as soon as possible since these time slots are fixed and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. In the event that an interview conflicts with a scheduled class, you must notify the professor in advance. Your professor has the prerogative to treat your absence as they see fit and in accordance with the course syllabus. An interview conflict is not a valid reason for an exam excuse and the UBP office will not issue an exam excuse.

Tar Heel Tracker is a degree-audit system available through the Student Center in Connect Carolina. It is a useful tool for academic planning only; do not use it as a confirmation of degree completion. It is meant to collapse a section when you have completed your requirements and remain expanded until you have satisfied your requirements. Meet with an academic advisor regularly to discuss your progress towards completing your degree.
If you would like to take a course at another institution and have it count toward your UNC-Chapel Hill degree, review the rules for transferring credit and fill out the Undergraduate Admissions Office’s online course evaluation form before you take the course. You will need to:
UNC Kenan-Flagler will consider for transfer credit business administration courses that meet the equivalency criteria for BUSI transfer credit.
If you are an enrolled full-time degree-seeking student, this program allows you to register for a course, with appropriate approval, at NCCU, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Greensboro, NC State or Duke University. Learn more about the policy and procedures.
The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree is awarded to students admitted into the UBP who successfully complete a minimum of 120 semester hours, all UNC general education requirements, major requirements and have at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
Upon timely submission of your graduation application, UBP academic advisors review your transcript and courses to certify you are able to graduate at the appropriate time. You are responsible for knowing your progress in relation to the rules and policies of UNC and the Business School while keeping track of your courses and obligations. UBP advisors are available to discuss your progress, problems or concerns and offer direction and support in academic and related areas, including but not limited to internships, study abroad and career development.

The UBP adheres strictly to the Office of University Registration calendar for administering add/drop procedures.
To add a business (BUSI) course:
Business minors must complete the course add form through their primary major school/college.
You may use the online registration system through ConnectCarolina to drop a class during the first two weeks of the semester, provided dropping the course will not reduce your credit load limit below 12 academic hours. Dropping a course after the second week of classes could result in a WC (withdrawal by choice) notation. You are not automatically dropped for nonattendance.
Notes:
To audit a course, a form must be completed and receive written permission from the professor. You may submit audit requests only after the last day for students to add a course. If you are officially registered as a UNC student, you may audit at no charge. Non-UNC students pay a $20 fee to the University cashier and file a copy of the receipt with the course instructor at the beginning of the term. If you audit a class, you will not receive any form of credit and you will not take any quizzes, tests, exams or be called on in class. For full details, visit the Office of University Registrar.
The Assured Admission Program (AAP) gives direct enrollment to the UBP for a small group of first-year students who are admitted to UNC. You are considered for the AAP through your UNC application.
AAP students start at UNC in the College of Arts & Sciences. You meet with your primary College of Arts & Sciences advisor to learn more about life at UNC, general education requirements, and work on pre-requisite courses for progression into the business major or minor. We encourage you to connect with UBP advisors and engage in the UBP community.
When AAP students complete their first year, they must fill out an official admission application by Sept. 1 and choose to enroll in the business major or minor program.
AAP students receive guaranteed UBP admission if they successfully meet these criteria:
First Year
Sophomore Year – Fall Semester
Sophomore Year – Spring Semester
UBP students may enroll in a maximum of one for-credit online course per regular semester and a maximum of two for-credit online courses per summer session (courses offered over the full summer would count in both Summer Session I and Summer Session II) through the William and Ida Friday Center. Business majors and minors are restricted from taking Financial Accounting (BUSI 106) and Management Accounting (BUSI 108) through the William and Ida Friday Center. More information pertaining to online courses including registration, tuition payment and other regulations surrounding these courses can be located through the Carolina Courses Online website. Students with second majors in the College of Arts & Sciences should be familiar with the policy that limits and/or restricts utilizing these types of courses to satisfy requirements for the second majors.
Self-paced courses do not count towards the Undergraduate Business degree.

UNC Kenan-Flagler UBP COVID-19 Pass/Fail FAQs:
Business majors are required to follow UNC Kenan-Flagler UBP procedures for approval.
Business minors must follow the procedures of your primary major college/school for approval.
Business majors are required to get permission from the undergraduate program academics office to take more than the maximum number of academic hours allowed in a term.
Course load limits are:
If you are a business major interested in requesting an overload, complete the online request form. Overloads will not be processed until open enrollment begins following the Office of University Registrar calendar.
If your overload request exceeds 21 credits, further review and approval will be obtained from the Director of Academics & Student Engagement.
Full-time undergraduate students at UNC-Chapel Hill are required to carry at least 12 credit hours every semester. In your final semester as a business major, you may carry fewer than 12 academic hours (an underload) if you meet these conditions:
1. You have submitted your application for graduation.
2. You will satisfy all of your remaining degree requirements with the requested underload.
3. The UBP approves your request for an underload.
If you have outstanding study abroad credit, transfer credits and/or pending course substitution petitions, you will be prompted to write an assumption of risk providing the status of the pending credits. Within the statement, you need to demonstrate that you understand the implications for your graduation if you don’t successfully complete all degree requirements. You could be asked to submit supporting documentation to verify the status of the pending credits and/or confirmation of the intended degree requirements in question. Underload requests will be denied if pending study abroad credits cannot be verified via an official transcript.
If you elect to enroll in fewer than 12 academic hours, the Office of the University Registrar cannot categorize you as a full-time student for official reporting purposes. This could compromise your eligibility for insurance coverage and/or invalidate some types of financial aid, such as scholarships and loans. You must verify with your insurance providers and/or financial aid/scholarship provider to determine if enrolling in fewer than 12 academic hours will make you ineligible for insurance coverage and/or financial aid.
Upon notification of underload approval, you are responsible for dropping additional classes from your schedule by the UNC Census date. Failure to remove additional classes by this deadline will have implications on your refund amount. To learn more about tuition and refunds, visit the University Cashier Office.
For University purposes, if you are approved for a senior underload you have the same rights, privileges and responsibilities as undergraduate students carrying 12 or more credit hours. You pay full-time student fees (not tuition) and you are permitted to reside in on-campus housing, use campus support services, and have access to athletic events.
As long as the requested course schedule will satisfy all remaining degree requirements, you can submit an underload request for as low as one(1)* credit hour. For instance, if you only need LFIT to graduate, you could technically submit a senior underload request for one credit hour. We still encourage you to take six or more hours.
*If you are on the UNC Student Health Insurance Plan or want to remain eligible for financial aid, you must enroll in a minimum of six hours.
Upon underload approval, you are responsible for finalizing your schedule by the term census date (same date as last day to drop semester courses). Any schedule adjustments following the census date, regardless if credit hours remain the same, may initiate additional tuition charges.
UBP majors may declare an area of emphasis (AOE) in Consulting, Entrepreneurship, Investment Banking (Corporate Finance), Investment Management, Marketing Management & Sales, Multinational Finance (General), Operations Management or Real Estate.
AOEs will not be noted on your transcripts or diploma, but you may note them on your resumes.
An online course evaluation is provided to all registered students in a course, typically during the last week of class up until the start of final exams. You will be notified of course evaluations through Canvas and email communication. The results are provided to the professor only after they have submitted final grades online.
The UBP appreciates all constructive feedback from our students. It provides crucial insights to professors about what is effective and how they might improve their courses.
A copy of all BUSI course syllabi are collected each semester and retained for record purposes. You have access to view current and past BUSI course syllabi through the Microsoft UBP Student Team by logging into your Kenan-Flagler Microsoft account (KFusername@business.unc.edu).
Undergraduate courses taught on campus must include a final assessment (final examination) unless the Provost grants an exception. We strictly adhere to the University final exam schedule. Any student who does not take the final exam and is reported absent without an official excuse will receive an AB, which is the equivalent of an F noted on the transcript.
University policy states that a student may petition to have a final exam rescheduled if they have two exams at the same time or three scheduled exams within a 24-hour period. Students should first speak with the faculty member regarding the time for a make-up exam.
Exam excuses are not given for job interviews, travel or other conflicts that could have been avoided.
Business majors are required to follow the UNC Kenan-Flagler UBP procedure for approval. Submit the online request form found on the Academics site and an advisor will review and notify you within two business days.
Business minors must follow the procedures of your primary major college/school for approval.
The Global Awareness/Inclusive Global Leadership requirement has been discontinued from the requirements of the business major. Tar Heel Tracker may still reflect this requirement, however, it will not be factored into the degree audit review or impact graduation approval.
The business internship credit option (BUSI 493) provides you with the opportunity to receive academic credit for your approved internship experience that would satisfy both Experiential Education general education requirement and business elective credit.
No more than three internship credit hours may apply to the business elective credit requirement.
BUSI 493 must be taken concurrently with the internship. No credit will be awarded retroactively for a past internship.
You are responsible for paying summer tuition for BUSI 493/593.
If you want to go beyond typical coursework to apply critical thinking to an intensive research project, you have the opportunity to do an Undergraduate Business Senior Honors Thesis. For almost a year, you will research, write and revise an original thesis on a business topic with the guidance of a UNC Kenan-Flagler professor.
Juniors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher and a business major GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible to do a Business Honors Thesis. Once you meet all requirements, you will graduate with honors or highest honors, depending on the recommendation of your thesis committee. The award with highest honors indicates you achieved superior status in all aspects.
In an Undergraduate Business Independent Study you can pursue a special research interest under the direction of a faculty supervisor. This course is only available to students admitted into the UBP (majors and minors).
The research and writing entailed in an independent study must be equivalent to the workload of a regular course. In particular, at least three hours of independent work per week is required for each credit unit and students must submit a final research paper at the end of the semester. The minimum standards for the final research paper depend on the credit allocation for the independent study. If you are pursuing a 3.0 credit hour independent study, you are required to submit a final research paper no fewer than 20 pages (not including a cover page, exhibits, endnotes or other references). If you are pursuing a 1.5 credit hour independent study, you are required to submit a final research paper no fewer than 12 pages (not including a cover page, exhibits, endnotes or other references).
If you wish to pursue independent study credit in UBP, complete the Independent Study Learning Contract (ISLC). This includes securing a faculty advisor/supervisor before you submit the ISLC and attaching a detailed work plan to the submission. After you’ve secured the appropriate signatures on the ISLC and attached a detailed work plan, the Assistant Dean of the Undergraduate Business Program will review your request for approval. The ISLC must be submitted and approved before the start of the semester during which you intend to pursue the independent study credit.
If you are seeking to satisfy your Experiential Education credit, we encourage you to select one of the other many options available in the UBP, such as business internship credit, STAR and study abroad)
UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School are committed to helping you reach your full academic potential. Give thoughtful consideration to your academic and personal goals and take responsibility for your academic choices and decisions. If you have extraordinary circumstances you may make an academic appeal.
Term of course(s) enrolled | Appeal Deadline | |
---|---|---|
Fall | 8 weeks into next semester (spring) | |
Spring | 8 weeks into next semester (fall) | |
Summer I and II | 8 weeks into next semester (fall) |
We review appeals on a rolling basis, in approximately 7 to 10 business days. The UBP reserves the right to ask for additional information about any appeal.
A Late Drop/Withdrawal allows you to request a late course adjustment after regular drop/withdraw deadlines have passed. In most circumstances, approved appeals will see requested courses dropped with a “W” notation on the transcript. Only students with documented extraordinary circumstances such as medical, psychological or family emergencies can expect to have late drop/withdrawal appeals approved.
Students seeking a late drop/withdrawal appeal should first schedule an advising appointment with an UBP Academic Advisor.
The University’s academic eligibility rules impose a limit on the number of semesters (fall or spring) in which students are allowed to enroll. Students are expected to complete their degree within a maximum of eight full-time semesters. Special permission is required to enroll in a ninth (or rarely, a tenth) semester. Summer sessions are not included in this limit.
If you have experienced exceptional extenuating circumstances you may request permission to enroll for an additional semester beyond the applicable maximum. Refer to the UBP Academics site for the online request form.
Any student who is permitted to enroll in a ninth semester or beyond may retain two minors or a second major and a minor. Permission for additional semesters will not be granted for the sole purpose of completing a second major, minor, study abroad program, or prerequisites for graduate school.
Transfer students who transfer in the UNC-Chapel Hill equivalent of two or more semesters may automatically be approved to enroll in up to 10 semesters.
The purpose of the Grade Appeal Policy is to provide you with a safeguard against receiving an unfair final grade in a course while respecting the academic independence and responsibility of the professor.
If, after reading the Grade Appeal Policy and taking the appropriate actions, the concern remains unresolved, you may submit a Grade Appeal request to the UBP Office.
If you decide to drop from the major to the minor, you must declare this before your senior year or before your last two semesters in the UBP. If you wish to change to another major within their last two semesters in the UBP, you must obtain approval from both the new major department and a UBP advisor for the business major to be dropped from your academic plan and a new major added. The UBP reserves the right to deny a request to switch from major to minor, and will most likely do so if it is determined that the student pursued the major for the purpose of obtaining business elective course credit beyond the minimum permitted for minors.
You may pursue up to three areas of study through a combination of majors and minors. Business majors will submit the online Academic Plan Change request (found on the UBP Academics site) for the UBP office to review and process minor program changes. Notation of any minor(s) will appear on your university transcript, not on your diploma.
*Minor programs that require application approval will be verified prior to the request being processed.
Business minors must request minor declarations/cancellations following your primary major school/college procedure.
You must first request and receive UBP approval to complete a second major. Requirements for both the BSBA degree and second major must be completed within the University’s allotted eight semesters.
In addition to submitting the Academic Plan Change request (found on the UBP Academics site), you need to include an updated BSBA worksheet and a semester-by-semester plan (including summer sessions as needed) showing how you will meet all requirements, including all business core courses and business electives, remaining general education requirements, and remaining courses for the second major.
You are awarded only one bachelor’s degree at UNC-Chapel Hill. If you are admitted to UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, you earn the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA). When you complete an approved second major, a transcript notation is made: “Degree Awarded with Second Major in {name of major}”.
If UNC Kenan-Flagler endorses a request for a second major, the endorsement is forwarded to the appropriate college/school for consideration. Upon approval, the college/school that houses the second major will update your record accordingly.
You are responsible for and should be proactive in seeking appropriate advising about courses and other requirements necessary to complete the BSBA degree with an approved second major. UNC Kenan-Flagler does not advise you on requirements for majors other than business, so you should also plan to meet regularly with your second major advisor.
As outlined in the University Catalog’s Pass/Fail Option section, Undergraduate students may elect a grading basis of Pass/Fail for one eligible course per semester. Students who declare a course pass/fail will receive:
PS and LP notations do not impact a student’s grade point average (GPA); however, an F grade is treated in the same manner as F grades earned in any other course and therefore does impact a student’s GPA.
Courses used to fulfill “Gateway”, “Prerequisite” or “Additional Requirements” for a declared major or minor (as outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog) may not be declared as PS/F. Also, students may not elect to change their major or minor for the purpose of declaring a course on a PS/F basis. Understanding that exploration may also lead to interest in a particular area, students may elect to use one course completed with a grade of PS, not LP, towards major and/or minor “Core Requirements” (as outlined in the Undergraduate Catalog). Meaning you can Pass/Fail one of your core BUSI requirements.
Undergraduate students may request one course to be placed on Pass/Fail grading per semester, but not including courses that are only offered on a Pass/Fail grading basis (such as research and internships). Additionally, no more than 23 total credit hours of Pass/Fail credit hours will be allowed in a student’s undergraduate career, including:
Business minors must follow the procedure of their primary major college/school to elect a course pass/fail.
Learn about the difference between withdrawal and cancellation here. Check on possible implications with financial aid, scholarships, insurance and visa, if applicable.
Withdrawal (once the semester has already started and you have attended at least one class). Read about the withdrawal policy, the withdrawal process and student withdrawal request.
For a cancellation (planning a semester off and the semester has not started), submit a registration cancellation request to the Registrar’s office.
For a cancellation when classes have started but you have not attended a course, contact UBP Academics with a request for cancellation. Verification of non-attendance from the professor(s) will be required.
To return to UNC/Kenan-Flagler after a leave of absence, you will first need complete the Return to Carolina Survey through UNC Admissions.
Once reviewed and processed by UNC Admissions, you will be activated for the term specified within the most recently declared major program of study. You should schedule an UBP academic advising appointment as soon as possible to discuss your return and academic success plan.
