Japan GIE: Anime & Business in Japan

Japan is a country of rich history, culture, and geography located on the eastern end of Asia. Referred to as the “land of the rising sun” and Nippon in local Japanese, Japan is home to 124 million people. Tokyo is one of the world’s largest cities geographically and by population, with 14 million residents. Japan has diverse terrain and climate due to its location on the Pacific Rim and a long archipelago consisting of over 14,000 islands.

In this Global Immersion Elective, explore and learn about Japanese animation (or “anime” for short). Anime is integrated into Japanese and global popular culture. A global phenomenon, anime is an international enterprise. In this course, students will explore questions such as: “What makes anime storytelling so globally resonant? How do brands cultivate fan communities? And what lessons can U.S. businesses learn from Japan’s cross-media franchises?”

Students will study anime, Japanese culture, and business practices in Mod 4 of the Spring semester. The program will then travel to Japan to study the Japanese economy and experience the anime industries in Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. The GIE plans to visit anime industries such as Toei Animation, Kyoto Animation, TV Tokyo, Sony/Aniplex, and Level 5 while also visiting cultural and historical sites of Japan. The immersion may include cultural experiences such as historical site visits, outdoor spaces that inspire anime scenes, sumo matches, and tea ceremonies.

Dr. Stephanie Mahin, Clinical Associate Professor of Management and Corporate Communication, will lead this global immersion.
