Global Academic Procedures

Global Immersion Electives:

Participants will be enrolled in a 3.0 credit hour course, earning UNC business elective credit, satisfying the requirements for Experiential Education and earning points towards the Kenan-Flagler Inclusive Global Leadership Initiative. Students must successfully complete the GIE coursework and the on-the-ground immersion in order to receive credit for this course. Students may participate in multiple GIEs for additional business elective credit.

International Internships:

Participants will be enrolled in a 3.0 credit hour course, BUSI 493–Internship Credit, earning UNC business elective credit, satisfying the requirements for Experiential Education and earning points towards the Kenan-Flagler Inclusive Global Leadership Initiative. This course includes submission of reflective activities assigned by UNC and a written evaluation from a supervisor, which will be included as a component of the student's grade.

Summer Programs:

Participants on an Undergraduate Business summer study abroad program may earn 3-6 UNC business elective and/or core credits. Participants will also satisfy the requirements for Experiential Education and earn points towards the Kenan-Flagler Inclusive Global Leadership Initiative.

  • Core Credit: A course will be approved if it is equivalent to the core course taught at Kenan-Flagler. The full course syllabus is needed for evaluation purposes. A full course syllabus includes a list of required readings, texts, a per-class breakdown of topics covered and outlines methods of assessment.
  • Business elective credit: Students need 18 credit hours of business electives to graduate, and this is the most common type of credit students receive abroad. Up to one business elective course taken abroad may also be used to count towards an Area of Emphasis.
  • General Education requirements: Students can fulfill Approaches, Connections, and Supplemental General Education requirements abroad with the appropriate approval. Summer program participants must take at least 1 business course.
  • Second major or minor credit: With the approval of the second major or minor department, you can receive credit for non-business courses to count towards your second major or minor. Summer program participants must take at least 1 business course.
  • Grades: Courses taken abroad on a Undergraduate Business semester study abroad program are transferred on a PS/F basis. You will receive credit for a course as long as your final grade is the equivalent of a C or above. Grading scales vary by country, and your study abroad advisor can tell you the minimum local grade needed for a Pass.

Please contact ubpglobal@kenan-flagler.unc.edu for course approvals and questions related to credit transfers.

Semester Programs:

Credit Information for Kenan-Flagler Business Students

Current business majors and minors may participate on a Kenan-Flagler Global Program offered by the Undergraduate Business Program, or an Arts & Sciences program offered through the Study Abroad Office. For non-graded credit programs through either Kenan-Flagler or main campus, business majors and minors seeking business credit towards their degree must submit full course syllabi for pre-approval by the deadline listed below:

  • Spring Semester: Feb. 1
  • Summer I or II: June 15
  • Fall Semester: Sep. 15

Students submit syllabi for review via the Kenan-Flagler course evaluation system, which is accessed through the Intranet, under My Courses (Quick Links menu on the left)/Undergraduate Exchange Course Credit Create Request. Kenan-Flagler will not review or award credit for any course submitted after the deadline, unless a student has advance written approval of the Kenan-Flagler Associate or Assistant Director for Global Programs in case of a late program start date or other extenuating circumstances. The pre-approval requirement is designed to help students know how their business courses will transfer from the start of the study abroad program and to assist with academic planning. For more information regarding the study abroad credit transfer, please review our Study Abroad Transfer Credit Process document. Business majors can transfer a maximum of 31 BUSI credit hours from graded study abroad coursework. Business minors can transfer a maximum of 6 BUSI credit hours from graded study abroad coursework.

The database also includes a history of how courses at different institutions have transferred for previous semesters (business core or elective credit, general credit, 2nd major, etc.) - students are encouraged to peruse this database in advance of selecting their courses. Please note that a previous approval for a course does not guarantee that the course will always count for the requirement listed, as course objectives and requirements are subject to change each semester.

Study Abroad Credit Prior to Admission to Kenan-Flagler

Students who study abroad prior to their admission to the Undergraduate Business Program (UBP) on programs provided by the main campus study abroad office or other global program offerings outside of the Kenan-Flagler Business School may submit a request for a maximum of 1 business (BUSI) course, to be considered for either core or elective BUSI credit. BUSI credit for pre-business students is not pre-approved - it is the student's responsibility to submit their abroad course selections for review through the Kenan-Flagler intranet once the student is accepted and enrolls in the Undergraduate Business Program. The only exception to this policy pertains to students in the Assured Admission Program (AAP). See more information regarding the Main Campus Transfer Credit Policy for BUSI Credit.

Students participating on Kenan-Flagler Global Programs should consult a Kenan-Flagler global programs advisor by scheduling a study abroad advising appointment here, or by emailing us at ubpglobal@kenan-flagler.unc.edu for specific information concerning credit.
