Welcome to the FBA program

The Undergraduate Business Program at Kenan-Flagler has opened a new chapter with the launch of the Future Business Admits (FBA) program, and the energy at its inaugural welcome event in McColl Cafe reflected just how significant this moment is. Students and faculty alike gathered for an event filled with games, networking, and community-building—complete with a photo booth, t-shirts, stickers, and empanadas.

The FBA program provides selected incoming first-year students with a guaranteed pathway into the UBP beginning their sophomore year. For these students, that means less stress about the application process and more time to focus on exploring opportunities, connecting with peers, and developing as future business leaders.

For members of this first cohort, the chance to be part of this groundbreaking opportunity is both exciting and humbling. “We’re making history,” said Rubi Nunez-Anaya. “We are fortunate enough to be among those admitted. I’m looking forward to networking and the opportunities and resources that come with being FBA.”

Her classmate, Sakethram Maramraj, echoed the sentiment but emphasized his excitement to get to know the people associated with the program. “The people make the experience. Everyone is smart, talented, and ambitious. You can see everyone getting along because we’re all hardworking and share common goals.”

That sense of belonging is one of the program’s defining features. For Rubi, having a built-in support system from the very start of her Carolina journey sets the experience apart. “This opportunity sparks my interest in business,” she said. Sakethram added that knowing his pathway is secure has deepened his academic focus: “I feel more engaged with what I’m learning. It’s enhanced my interest in business. In terms of my career, I’m interested in finance, and there are so many resources available through the business school that I’m grateful to have access to.”

Fellow student Aldiyar Zhandaulet also pointed to the long-term benefits: “I’m mainly interested in finance—connecting with professionals, exploring growth opportunities, internships, and networking. I’m also interested in how the integration of AI will shape the field.”

Faculty and staff see the launch of the program as equally impactful. Kris Elijah, Assistant Director of the FBA program, shared that the goal is not only to guarantee a pathway into the business school but also to create a strong community from the moment students set foot on campus. “Coming in later can distort that sense of belonging for students. With the FBA program, students get hands-on attention that they might need, and the cohort aspect builds community right away,” she explained.

Beyond community, the program will open doors to unique experiences such as study abroad opportunities, leadership development courses, and early career exploration. From future global programs in Barcelona to specialized first-year courses, FBA students will have a head start in shaping their academic and professional identities.

As the inaugural cohort left the welcome event with new friends, new t-shirts, and plenty of excitement, it was clear that the FBA program is more than a pathway for business-oriented students; it effectively serves as a launchpad for success. For these students, being a Future Business Admit means entering Carolina with confidence, purpose, and a network of peers who will grow alongside them.
