MAC Mentorship students present solutions to AT&T

As part of the UNC Kenan-Flagler MAC Mentorship Program, students enrolled in fall 2015 section of MAC 777 – a guided research course – worked with AT&T to tackle real-world issues affecting the telecommunications industry at large.

To solve the business challenge, students conducted extensive research and analysis, consulted professionals with expertise in specific topics and worked closely with AT&T. They presented their recommendations to AT&T in December 2015.

Skills for every career path

The MAC Mentorship Program – a joint initiative between UNC Kenan-Flagler and Carolina Covenant and sponsored by PwC – offers an amazing opportunity for UNC undergraduate students from any major to get involved with the Master of Accounting (MAC) Program.

MAC mentees gain exposure to the accounting industry and network with faculty and professionals. MAC mentees learn valuable business skills they can apply universally in whatever career path they decide to pursue.

The MAC Mentorship Program hosts workshops and events for students throughout the spring semester. After completing the MAC Mentorship Program during the spring semester, students can apply to take the MAC 777 course taught by Tamara Barringer.

Students sound off

The presentations to AT&T were a great success for the students and reflected how much hard work they put into the projects throughout the semesters.

We asked students to reflect on their project and their experience in the MAC 777 course. Here’s what they said:

“I think the biggest surprise about the Guided Research in Business class was that it turned out to be one of the most rewarding courses I’ve taken at UNC. The experience that I acquired is something that I will certainly take with me for the rest of my life. Guided Research in Business was like taking a 3-credit hour course while doing an internship at the same time. It’s one of the few courses that actually offer resume-worthy experience by providing students with the opportunity to do research for reputable companies – in my case, AT&T.

Perhaps the most important aspect of the class is that it truly prepares you for the real business world – a world where you have to think outside the box and get out of your comfort zone in order to find solutions to problems. It is definitely not your typical boring academic research class!” – Israel A. Moleiro

“MAC 777 has been one of the most rewarding classes I have taken at UNC. It is a rare and rewarding experience for undergraduates to work in a professional environment. It goes outside the model of other classes and is an opportunity for students to work as professionals. The skills, experience, partners and mentors I have encountered have been tremendously valuable. I will look back on this class as a stepping stone into my professional career.” – Jihe Koo
