The research interests of Vinayak Deshpande are in the area of supply chain collaboration, service parts management, and addressing security and privacy issues in supply chains. He conducts this work in industry sectors that include defense, aviation, airlines, computers and automobiles.

His research work focuses on airline flight delays, and was honored with the best contribution award by the Airline Group of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies (AGIFORS), a professional society dedicated to the advancement and application of operational research in the airline industry.

An award-winning teacher and researcher, Dr. Deshpande joined UNC Kenan-Flagler from Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management.

He has consulted with a variety of companies, including Motorola and MCA Solutions.

Dr. Deshpande worked with the U.S. Coast Guard on a series of projects for optimizing the supply chain used for aircraft service parts. That work was selected as a finalist for the Edelman Award, and he was honored as an Edelman Award Laureate for an outstanding example of management science and operations research practice.

His research has been published in premier academic journals such as Management Science and Operations Research. He received the Dantzig Dissertation award for his PhD dissertation.

Dr. Deshpande received his PhD in operations management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He holds a MS in operations research from Columbia University; an MS in industrial engineering from the University of Miami; and a B. Tech. in mechanical engineering from I.I.T., Mumbai
