UNC Kenan-Flagler Energy Center MBA students place second at NEFC

Congratulations to UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA candidates Ellie June, Tim Raiford, Mac Roberts, Sabrina Tran and Michael Zorger on their second place finish at the 20th annual National Energy Finance Challenge (NEFC). The competition pitted teams from top MBA programs to address real-world finance, risk and dynamic energy industry opportunities. It was judged by executives from Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Phillips66, Accenture Strategy, Harvest Midstream, Normura Greentech, TPH & Co and Guggenheim at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business in Austin.  This energy finance case competition involved global oil and gas opportunities located in places presenting a variety of political and operating risks. UNC Kenan-Flagler’s team successfully addressed these challenges, in the process besting all competing teams from Texas MBA programs.

The UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA Energy Program is unique among business schools. It addresses the full energy value chain: oil and gas through renewables and focusing on succeeding in the Business of Energy while navigating a transition. We’re proud of how our students demonstrated our comprehensive curriculum to thoughtfully showcase multiple aspects of the energy value chain and creatively address the complex global business and economic circumstances unique to the energy industry.

At the Department of Energy (DOE) loan programs office, students learned about the DOE’s role in providing expanding affordable, patient financing options to scale companies with proven energy technologies large-scale clean energy projects essential for meeting the nation’s decarbonization goals. On the final leg of our Energy Trek, the group had the honor of visiting ZETA’s office. Students had insightful discussions with the policy director, regulatory director and their corresponding teams. The conversations revolved around ZETA’s dedicated advocacy, lobbying, and community education efforts, aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and bolstering support for their member organizations.

The UNC Kenan-Flagler Energy Club extends its gratitude to all participants. Their insights and mentorship will prove invaluable to its members as they venture into the energy sector.
