Passing the Torch: Future of Investment Management

Join us April 25, 2024, to honor the career and legacy of Mustafa Gültekin as he retires from UNC Kenan-Flagler. Learn more about investment management at UNC Kenan-Flagler, what the future holds, and how you can be a part of this amazing journey and growth. We will wrap up the event with the second annual Undergrad Alpha Competition.

Thursday, April 25:

12:30-1:50 p.m. – PRIME Student Presentations, class with Pramita Saha: McColl 2600 (Lunch provided for PRIME attendees, select this option at registration to participate)

Get a glimpse of what PRIME has grown into through the eyes of our students. The PRIME program was born out of a discussion amongst alumni and other key stakeholders in 2021.  Come and see how this idea has come to fruition and developed into a flourishing experiential class! For all alumni and friends of the program, current PRIME students and prospective UNC PRIME students.

2:00-3:20 p.m. – Attend Fundamentals in Investing Practicum Class with Jim Jones: McColl 2650

Fundamentals in Investing or “Picking Stocks in the Real World” – Jim Jones’s class began as a four-day fall workshop 10 years ago. When the class moved to zoom in 2020, a light bulb went on and it became a year-long practicum.  Guest speakers include Win Murray, Jeff Grothe, and Dennis Greenway. For current students in the class and all alumni and friends of the program.

2:00-3:20 p.m. – The Path Forward with Credit, Private Equity, Quant, Capital Allocation and Beyond: McColl 2575

Opportunities in credit, on the public and private side, as well as private equity, quant, capital allocation and other areas are changing rapidly.  Join us for an interactive session on how to move the experiential aspects of our program forward, whether it is through the Alpha Challenge credit bracket, PRIME, our overall curriculum and more.  All alumni, friends of the program and faculty welcome!

3:30-4:50 p.m. – The Future of Investment Management at UNC Kenan-Flagler: McColl 2575

How do we continue to elevate Kenan-Flagler’s brand in the Investment Management industry? Learn how alumni are playing an active role in this endeavor and join us for a highly interactive session on how you can be part of this journey. We encourage all alumni, friends of the program, and faculty to please join this session, if your schedule permits.

5:00-6:20 p.m. – AIM Board meeting: McColl 2575

The Applied Investment Management (AIM) course has long been a cornerstone of the Capital Markets and Investment Management curriculum and a key to student success. Join us for our bi-annual board meeting, celebrating the 25 years of AIM – all are welcome!

7:00-9:30 p.m. – Dinner Honoring Mustafa Gültekin and Graduates: Rizzo Hotel and Conference Center, and DuBose House

Please join us for a dinner celebrating Prof. Mustafa Gultekin and let’s wish him well as he sets sail on his new adventures!  We would also take this opportunity to congratulate all our graduates for their incredible achievements during their time at Carolina! Alumni, friends of the program, faculty/staff, graduates, student leaders – please join us!

Friday, April 26:

9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. – Undergrad Alpha Competition: McColl 2575

We are pleased to host the 2nd Undergraduate Alpha Competition.  Last year we had 30+ undergraduate students (mostly first-years and sophomores) participate, led by the Investment Management Center, Smart Woman Securities, Fixed Income Association and our MBA Alpha Challenge chair and mentors.  Come and watch our undergraduate talent battle it out and get to know them over networking sessions and lunch. Alumni, friends of the program, faculty/staff, UG Student participants, mentors and student leaders all welcome!

12:30-2:00 p.m. – Lunch and UG Alpha Award Ceremony: Blue Zone Concourse Club

Day activities will conclude with lunch at the Blue Zone. UG Alpha competition winners to be announced at Lunch.  Alumni, friends of the program, faculty/staff, all welcome!

2:30-3:30 p.m. – Tar Heel Football-Behind the Scenes: Blue Zone Concourse Club

NEW activity!  We are excited to announce a special opportunity for our event attendees.  The Rams Club is offering us a tour of Kenan Stadium guided by Former UNC Players!  We will be granted access to the Players Lounge, Locker Rooms, Jordan Experience Room, New Sports Medicine Wing, and a walk on Chris Smith Field.    Alumni, friends of the program, faculty/staff, all welcome!

6:00-8:00 p.m. – UNC vs. VTech Baseball Game: Boshamer Stadium 

We have two boxes at Boshamer Stadium reserved for alumni and friends of the program attendees.  All seats are filled.  Please contact Christina Hardin (christina_hardin@kenan-flagler.unc.edu) if you are still interested.
