Investing in the next generation

Thank You Sign In Front Of Students At UNC Kenan-Flagler

UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Office of Advancement hosted its tenth annual Donors & Scholars Celebration, an event where fellowship and scholarship donors meet the students who benefit from their philanthropy. More than 240 people attended the 2020 celebration at Chapel Hill’s Carolina Club, including donors, faculty, staff and more than 140 student scholarship and fellowship recipients.

“We hold this event because it is so important for our donors and students to meet each other,” says Doug Shackelford (BSBA ’80), dean and Meade H. Willis Distinguished Professor of Taxation. “Donors can see their investment in the next generation of business students, and our students learn, as recipients of someone else’s philanthropy, the importance of paying it forward.”

The featured speaker was Steve Vetter (BSBA ’78), operating partner at CenterOak Partners. He and his wife Debbie established the R. Steven Vetter MBA Fellowship Fund.

Testimonials from student recipients featured the following scholarship and fellowships:

  • Joseph Ibrahim (BSBA ’20) – The Alvin M. Bodford Undergraduate Assured Admission Scholarship
  • Mahsa Movahed (MAC ’20) – The Robert G. Sanford/PricewaterhouseCoopers Fellowship Fund
  • Maya Anderson (MBA ’20) – The Bank of America MBA Fellowship and The J. Taylor Rankin GIE Memorial Fellowship

The School has 212 scholarships and fellowships.

“People decide to establish scholarships and fellowships for many reasons, and every reason is a heartfelt one, for the donor as well as for us at UNC Kenan-Flagler,” says Shackelford. “These scholarships and fellowships help us compete for top students, provide unique study abroad opportunities and better prepare our graduates for career success.”
