Paul Cornwell teaches courses in data analytics, statistics, and data storytelling in graduate and undergraduate programs at UNC Kenan-Flagler.

He believes that the role of analytics is to help people make better decisions. He puts business decisions at the center of each lesson and helps students build intuition for the analytical techniques that inform those decisions. His goal is for students to leave class with the confidence and skills to approach complex, unfamiliar problems.

Dr. Cornwell has significant experience in both technical roles and strategy consulting across multiple industries.

He was a strategy consultant with Triangle Insights Group, a life-sciences consultancy based in Durham, and a senior professional staff member at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

He now works with small and medium-sized businesses, advising them on strategy and helping them use analytics to improve decision making. He also volunteers with his local SCORE chapter and with EforAll, two organizations dedicated to helping entrepreneurs grow new businesses.

Prior to his industry career, Dr. Cornwell was a research mathematician studying dynamical systems. He published several papers in leading journals and won multiple awards, including UNC’s Distinguished Dissertation Award.

He earned his PhD in mathematics from UNC-Chapel Hill, his MBA from UNC Kenan-Flagler, and his MA and BS in mathematics and his BA in philosophy from Villanova University.
