MBA Energy Club

Duke Energy Trek students

The Energy Club supports the academic experience and development of all students at UNC Kenan-Flagler interested in diverse aspects of the energy industry. The club works closely with the academic faculty, career management staff and other student leadership groups to organize educational events and conferences, case competitions and career treks to provide students with experiential learning and networking opportunities with industry professionals and alumni.

Patrick Wheeler

President

Patrick Wheeler

Pat is a member of the MBA Class of 2024, concentrating in Energy and Real Estate. Before pursuing his MBA, Pat worked in consulting for CGI Federal, implementing finance and procurement IT systems for government clients. This summer, Pat will intern at Duke Energy on the Energy Storage Development team. Pat earned a BA in Business Administration from North Carolina State University.

Luke Spencer

Learning & Development

Luke Spencer

Luke is a member of the MBA Class of 2024, focusing on Energy and Sustainable Enterprise. Before pursuing his MBA, he worked as a technical services engineer at Epic Health Systems. Luke earned a BA in economics from Northwestern University.

For his internship, Luke will join Marathon Petroleum, working with their renewable fuels asset development team.

Mary Msemwa

Diversity & Inclusion

Mary Msemwa

Mary P. Msemwa is a member of the MBA Class of 2024, focusing on Energy and Sustainable Enterprise. Before her MBA, she worked at the U.S. Commercial Service in Tanzania, where served as a senior commercial specialist and was a team lead for oil and gas and ICT for Sub-Saharan Africa. Before that, she worked in telecom in distribution channel development. This summer, Mary will intern with Amazon Transportation Services in Program Management. Mary holds a master of international management from Exeter University (UK) and a BA in business and economics from Middlesex University (UK). She is a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

Shirley Fontanie

Shirley Fontanié is a member of the MBA Class of 2024, pursuing Energy. Shirley is also pursuing a dual-degree with Duke University’s Master of Environmental Management, where she is concentrating in water resources management. Before graduate school, Shirley worked in commercial real estate at Cushman & Wakefield, and in operations with an urban park in Memphis. She earned her BA in business and environmental studies from Rhodes College. This summer she will be interning in a planning/consulting role at WSP in San Diego.

David Havill

David Havill

David Havill is a member of the MBA Class of 2024, focusing on Energy and Corporate Finance. Before pursuing his MBA, he worked in the oil and gas industry as a field engineer for multiple hydraulic fracturing companies. This summer, David will cover energy during his internship on Piper Sandler’s Houston investment banking team. David earned a BS in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma.

Hugh Tillett

Hugh is a member of the MBA Class of 2024, concentrating in Energy. Before coming to UNC Kenan-Flagler, Hugh worked for Crayhill Renewables, a $1B growth equity firm in the renewable energy space running their M&A and development function. Prior to this role, he worked in project and business development capacities for Silicon Ranch Corporation and Cypress Creek Renewables. Hugh received a BS in business administration and a BS in mathematics from Appalachian State University. In the summer of 2023, Hugh will work with the full requirements team within NextEra’s energy marketing division.

Trinayana Kumar Varakala

Trinayana is a member of the MBA Class of 2024 concentrating on Energy and Corporate Finance. Previously he worked an in-house legal counsel in India for four years. He founded and operated a startup that acted as an aggregator and provided roof-top solar solutions to domestic households. His experience as a lawyer working on corporate social responsibility initiatives and as an entrepreneur working in the solar space has fueled his passion for renewables and sustainability. He is passionate about renewable energy and decarbonization.

 

Pavan Kumar Medepalli

Treks - Oil & Gas

Pavan Kumar Medepalli

Pavan is a member of the MBA Class of 2024, concentrating in Corporate Finance and Energy. Prior to business school, he has rich energy industry experience in various capacities in India and across the Middle East. Pavan’s most recent role was as a senior planning engineer at Schneider Electric, where he contributed to a security enhancement project for one of the world’s largest LNG producers. He holds a B.Tech in electrical engineering from Acharya Nagarjuna University, India, and an M.Tech in high voltage engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada, India. This summer, Pavan will intern in finance and business Development at Kinder Morgan.

Emerson Harris

Emerson Harris is a member of the MBA Class of 2024 with concentrations in Energy and Corporate Finance. He is a licensed professional engineer with prior experience as a refrigeration and energy management systems design engineer for commercial supermarkets. Emerson earned his BS in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University. This summer, he will be interning as a finance intern at ExxonMobil in Houston, Texas.

Harlan Belcher

Harlan Belcher is a member of the MBA Class of 2024, concentrating in Energy and Real Estate. Before pursuing his MBA, he worked as a wildland firefighter in Northern California. Harlan interned at Veloce Energy last summer and is pursuing a Master in Environmental Management from Duke University. This summer, Harlan will intern for NextEra Energy Resource’s mobility team developing charging infrastructure for commercial vehicle fleets. Harlan earned a BA in political science from The College of Charleston.

Blessing Ezealigo

Blessing Ezealigo is a member of the MBA Class of 2024, concentrating on Energy and Operations. She has a B.Tech and M.Sc in physics from Nigeria with a PhD in innovation sciences and technologies from the University of Cagliari, Italy . She has worked with an energy start-up as a project manager and an operations manager in the service industry. This summer she will be interning with Amazon in an operations pathways manager role.
