Jason Doherty teaches courses in technology commercialization and entrepreneurship and works closely with the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. One of his areas of expertise is intellectual property based technology commercialization, especially as it relates to innovations developed through the university research base.
He also serves as faculty advisor for STAR, a program that offers opportunities for students work with companies to solve complex business problems.
Professor Doherty also has an appointment in the Office of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (IEED) working with UNC’s biomedical startup accelerator program, KickStart Venture Services. He advises university startups.
He is co-principal investigator for Technology Commercialization Carolina, a $1.1 million grant-funded program from the U.S. Economic Development Agency focused on improving economic development through increased technology commercialization.
Professor Doherty previously directed the technology commercialization team at the New Orleans BioInnovation Center in Louisiana, where he supported university spinouts and other technology startups in biotechnology, medical devices and diagnostics, and other fields.
He serves as treasurer for Mission3, a North Carolina-based non-profit focusing on novel solutions for improving medical education in the U.S.
He received his PhD in cellular and molecular pathology from the UNC School of Medicine and his BSc in biological sciences from North Carolina State University.
