MAC Students Gain Real-World Tax Experience Through VITA Program
Margot Howard, an accounting professor at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, created a Master of Accounting (MAC) course that gives students real-world experience by preparing tax returns for low- and middle-income individuals through the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Students applied classroom knowledge in a hands-on setting, enhancing their understanding of tax policy, reinforcing CPA exam concepts, and developing communication and client service skills. Before volunteering, students completed three IRS certification tests to ensure they met VITA’s ethical and procedural standards.
Howard, a former Deloitte tax consultant and longtime VITA volunteer, designed the course to combine technical tax training with service learning. Students discussed key aspects of the U.S. tax system and then volunteered at local VITA clinics, working with diverse clients such as retirees and grad students.
Through this experience, students gained insight into how tax policies affect real lives. They also developed confidence in client interactions and a deeper understanding of the purpose behind tax rules. Howard also volunteered as a quality reviewer, working alongside her students.
“This is experiential learning in action,” says Howard. “It shows the positive impact students and faculty can have beyond the classroom while preparing for their professional futures.”
