Global Programs Academic Procedures

You will be enrolled in a 3.0 credit hour course, earning UNC business elective credit and satisfying the requirements for Experiential Education. You must successfully complete the GIE coursework and the on-the-ground immersion in order to receive credit for this course. Business majors are limited to taking a maximum of 9 credits of 300-level business elective courses that will count towards their required 18 credit hours of business elective hours. All Global Immersion Electives are 300-level courses. Students may choose to take more than 9 credits of 300-level business electives, but they will not count towards the business major, and will only count towards their overall 120 credit hours to graduation

You will be enrolled in a 3.0 credit hour course, BUSI 393–Internship Credit, earning UNC business elective credit and satisfying the requirements for Experiential Education. This course includes submission of reflective activities assigned by UNC and a written evaluation from a supervisor, which will be included as a component of your grade. Successful completion of BUSI 393 is required in order to receive credit for this program.

You may earn 3-6 UNC business elective and/or core credits on an Undergraduate Business summer study abroad program. You will also satisfy the Experiential Education requirement. The maximum amount of business credit any one course can receive is 3 UNC credit hours. If a course is worth more than the equivalent of 3 UNC credit hours, the additional hours will transfer back as general elective hours.

• Core credit: A course will be approved if it is equivalent to the core course taught at Kenan-Flagler. The full course syllabus is needed for evaluation purposes. A full course syllabus includes a list of required readings, texts, a per-class breakdown of topics covered and outlines methods of assessment.
• Business elective credit: You need 18 credit hours of business electives to graduate; this is the most common type of credit received abroad. Up to one business elective course taken abroad may also be used to count towards an Area of Emphasis.
• General Education requirements: You can fulfill Approaches, Connections, and Supplemental General Education requirements abroad with the appropriate approval. You must take at least 1 business course in your summer study abroad program.
• Study abroad transcript request: Transcripts from your host institution cannot be ordered through the Undergraduate Business Program upon your return to UNC. All orders must be made directly through your host institution.

Semester study abroad keeps you on track for graduation. Students participating on semester exchange program need to plan to take a full semester of business courses during their term abroad. You must enroll full-time for 12-18 credit hours, the same as you would take at UNC. The maximum amount of business credit any one course can receive is 3 UNC credit hours. If a course is worth more than the equivalent of 3 UNC credit hours, the additional hours will transfer back as general elective hours.

We align with UNC’s Study Abroad Office in regard to grading information. You must earn the equivalent of a UNC “C” or better in order to earn credit from your study abroad program, and the following will apply for all study abroad programs (not including Global Immersion Electives or International Internships, as these are graded UNC courses for which you will receive a letter grade on your UNC transcript):

• Passed credit (courses where a “C” or better is earned) will be reflected on the UNC transcript as a “ SA” or study abroad pass and satisfy the approved requirement. The passed credit will not be calculated in your GPA.

• Failed credit (courses where a “C-” or less is earned) will be reflected on the UNC transcript as a “ SF” or study abroad fail AND impact the UNC GPA as the equivalent of an “F” grade

• Withdrawn credit (courses with a W or withdrawn grade) will be reflected on the UNC transcript as a “ SW ” or study abroad withdrawal but will not earn credit or impact the UNC GPA.

• No credit (courses where credit cannot be awarded- i.e. alcohol-based courses)* will be reflected on the UNC transcript with a grade of “SN” or study abroad no credit but will not earn credit or impact the GPA.
  • (*Study abroad courses that focus on the production and/or marketing of alcoholic beverages will not be eligible for academic credit at UNC. This includes, but not limited to, courses that focus on Wine/Beer/Liquor production, tasting, and/or tourism. If a student chooses to take a course abroad that focuses on alcohol, the student must be enrolled in the minimum equivalent of required UNC credit hours, in addition to that course.)
• Check the ‘Academics’ accordion on each program’s page for specific information about the grade equivalent needed to achieve the equivalent of a UNC ‘C’ or higher at that particular host institution
