Building Community

The relationships you form and the community you become a part of are important parts of any MBA program. At Kenan-Flagler, we hold social and cultural events, bring in guest speakers and provide opportunities for fun (and even a little play) with classmates and others from our community.

Social Events

These themed evening socials are held on the courtyard outside the business school or at local establishments. Current students and their families, faculty and staff attend these active socials, which are jointly planned by the MBA Program office and the MBA student body:

  • MBASA Activities Fair
  • MBA Gala
  • MBA Follies
  • Faculty Appreciation Social

Cultural Events

Some of our featured MBA Program cultural events include:

  • International Food Fest
  • Global Night
  • Harambee Fashion Show

MBA Family Socials

The UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA Partners Association, known as Kenan Connection, is a model among business schools. The Partners Association is made up of the spouses and significant others of MBA students. We want your partner to feel as much a part of our community as you’ll be. These MBA Families Club, MBA Program Office and Kenan Connection plan family-friendly social events for the entire community, including:

  • Pool Party during ASW
  • Durham Bulls Game during ASW
  • Pumpkin Patch and Farm Visit
  • Movie Nights on Campus

Legacy Cup Events

Teamwork is a core value at Kenan-Flagler Business School, but we also understand the value of competition. As an MBA student, you’ll be placed into one of eight Legacy sections, each of which consists of roughly 37 students.

Throughout the year, our first- and second-year Legacy sections combine and compete against other sections in a year-long effort to win the coveted Legacy Cup. Events include:

  • Kickball Tournament
  • Scavenger Hunt
  • MBA Karaoke
  • Fall and Spring Community Service Days
  • Legacy Olympics

Dean’s Speaker Series & Weatherspoon Lectures

The Dean’s Speaker Series and Weatherspoon Lectures bring prominent speakers to campus regularly. Hearing how successful individuals have overcome challenges and made an impact on their organization, community and, often, the world, is a valuable part of understanding leadership.

The UNC Kenan-Flagler community has had the privilege of hearing from influential leaders such as:

  • Sherron Watkins, former VP and whistle-blower, Enron
  • David Ignatius, associate editor and columnist, The Washington Post
  • Jeb Bush, former Florida governor
  • Jason Kilar, founder, Hulu
  • Peter Grauer, chairman, Bloomberg LP
  • Alan Murray, editor, Fortune
  • Olympia Snowe, U.S. Senator (R-Maine, retired)
