Nonprofit Board Consultants

Giving back is part of the Carolina Way. And supporting non-profit organizations from the local area is something that UNC Kenan-Flagler takes very seriously. The Nonprofit Board Consultants Program provides an opportunity for you to put your skills and knowledge to work while helping a local non-profit organization.

The program places MBA students on nonprofit boards of directors as non-voting members, which, in turn, offers exposure to high-level strategy and leadership experiences, opportunities to interact with experienced mentors, chances to serve the community, and training and tools necessary to serve on a board after you graduate.

Learn what it takes to join the UNC-Kenan Flagler Full-Time MBA program.

As a student consultant, you’ll work with the board to develop and lead a project specific to the organization’s advancement. At the conclusion of the program, you’ll present their progress to organization leaders, peer consultants and MBA staff members.

Examples of past projects include:

  • Strategic fundraising and marketing plans
  • Improved internal and external communication strategies
  • Potential merger analysis

Nonprofit organizations benefit by gaining access to talented business leaders who offer new insights and have a wide range of business skills. Additionally, the program helps organizations further their brand and provides networking opportunities with future nonprofit leaders.

Some of our past nonprofit partners have included Habitat for Humanity, Super Cooper Red Wagon Foundation, United Way, Paws4Ever, Big Brothers Big Sisters, PORCH, Meals on Wheels, TABLE and Ronald McDonald House.

"My experience as a Nonprofit Board Consultant helped me improve my stakeholder management skills, ability to set expectations, and work across a team with diverse backgrounds and interests to achieve a goal. I learned what it means to volunteer my time at a high level and go above and beyond, particularly when you have other competing priorities. This truly is a unique program that is shaped by your team, your non-profit partner, and your own perspective."
