Investing in DEI

Scale School, part of the Entrepreneurship Center, is launching new programs to build knowledge, provide tools and instill confidence in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) for entrepreneurs and investors.

The programs are designed for entrepreneurs and company leaders who want to create a more inclusive workspace, and people interested in investing in the Black technology startup ecosystem as well as investors who want to increase their pipeline of diverse companies.

“Fireside chats” and certificate programs will be offered virtually starting on June 22.

  • Activating DEI Solutions in Your Life and Your Company” is a free fireside chat that will be held June 22 from 1-2 p.m. ET. It is designed to develop a better understanding of how to operationalize DEI solutions within organizations and provides tools and strategies to make progress. Rodney Sampson, co-founder of Opportunity Hub, will lead the discussion. Part inspiration and part sneak peek into the new DEI Solutions certificate course, participants will hear from top leaders who are skilled at incorporating DEI solutions in companies and learn about a helpful framework developed by Sampson to support those efforts.
  • Become an Investor in Black Venture Funds, High-Growth Startups and Ecosystems” is a free fireside chat that will be held June 24 from 1-2 p.m. ET. Sampson, who is also a general partner of 100 Black Angels + Allies Fund, will lead a conversation about how to get started as an investor in early-stage Black- and Brown-founded venture funds and startups; essential components of how to evaluate and make investments; and how investing in this asset class will help to close the U.S. racial wealth gap. He will give a preview of the upcoming Black Technology Investors Certificate course.
  • The Black Technology Ecosystem Investment Certificate Program will provide in-depth training on the tactics, nuances and strategies required to become a knowledgeable investor in high-growth technology startups and venture funds. The course is uniquely designed for aspiring Black and ally investors who want to invest in the Black technology, startup and venture fund deal flow. Sessions will be held virtually from 1-3 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month starting in August and ending in January 2022. During his 20-year entrepreneurial career, Sampson has co-founded startup companies that have overcome the odds by collectively raising more than $20 million in angel and venture capital, created hundreds of new jobs and generated tens of millions in revenue before acquisition or going public. He is a Keohane Distinguished Visiting Professorship at UNC and Duke.
  • The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Solutions (DEIS) Certificate Program is designed as an immersive, six-month engagement to create and integrate solutions that effectively operationalize DEIS into all key facets of the company. It features a framework of best practices and culturally competent insights to identify and implement the actions that will lead to advancing the organization’s market share, economic output and shareholder value while developing strengths as a transformational leader. Sessions will be held virtually from 1-3 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month starting in August and ending in January 2022.
