WORKING Languages program adds online Portuguese course

Business professionals nationwide, MBA students, faculty and staff are invited to register through Jan. 14 for UNC CIBER's WORKING Portuguese program, an online course offered during spring 2013.

CIBER has opened the program to participants outside of UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School due to increased demand and Brazil's growing importance in the global economy.

“Business students and professionals gain a distinct advantage from knowing the languages and the culture of the countries in which they are working,” says Maria Elena Rodriguez, director of the WORKING Languages program. “With more and more companies doing business in Brazil, it’s increasingly important to make Portuguese accessible to as many professionals and MBA students as possible in order for them to be as competitive as possible in the global economic arena.”

WORKING Languages™ online courses use a unique combination of business-focused teaching materials, instructor-led workshops, and weekly conversation hours with native speakers to produce culturally sensitive speakers who function effectively and comfortably in the target language’s workplace. In addition to Portuguese, an online course is available in Mandarin.

The program’s focus on learning business terms specifically and practicing conversational language with native speakers is particularly effective for global business professionals.

Brazil is one of three markets targeted for study by Kenan-Flagler along with China and India. Portuguese will continue to be offered for Kenan-Flagler MBA students as a classroom course during fall semesters.

In addition to the online, not-for credit classes, the WORKING Languages program offers in-person classes in Portuguese, Mandarin and Spanish to Kenan-Flagler MBA students and Working Spanish to undergraduate students. UNC faculty and staff and others may be given permission by the instructor to enroll in these courses.
