PhD Opportunities

By offering opportunities for research and intellectual exchange, the Center for Sustainable Enterprise provides a unique and valuable resource for PhD students at Kenan-Flagler Business School.

Workshops, seminars, and company partnerships enable students from a variety of disciplines to interact with industry and thought leaders in the field of sustainability. These relationships result in theoretical and practitioner-oriented research opportunities.

In addition, the CSE assists doctoral students in obtaining grants and securing resources to pursue their interest in sustainable enterprise as it applies to their functional area of study.

Curriculum

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers a select number of doctoral-level classes specifically focused on the environmental and social impacts of business. There are also a number of faculty members at UNC Kenan-Flagler and elsewhere on campus offering classes and doing research in this field. It is common for students to arrange independent research projects with these faculty members to fulfill the requirements for their degree and explore more deeply their areas of interest.

In addition, the University has cooperative agreements with Duke University, North Carolina State University, North Carolina A&T State University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro that make courses at any of these schools available to our students.

Getting the toolkit to turn passion into career

"Coming to UNC Kenan-Flagler was squarely rooted in my desire to align my interest in sustainability with my experience in finance. UNC Kenan-Flagler and the CSE have really provided me a great opportunity to achieve this goal by giving me the toolkit necessary to turn my passion into a career.

UNC Kenan-Flagler’s network has enabled me to work on multiple engagements with leading-edge sustainable investors. I have also taken advantage of the opportunity to become involved as an organizer of the Sustainable Venture Capital Investment Competition. These experiences have been truly transformative."
