Worth the Drive
“There are certainly Executive MBA programs that are closer to my home in the DC area, but with a little research I discovered that UNC had the only Top 20 program on the East Coast with tuition under $100k. I’m paying my own way, so value is an important factor, and I decided it was worth the commute.
When I attended UNC’s informational day, I met a second year student who was commuting from northern Virginia. I asked him about the commute, and he encouraged me to drive down on Thursday nights so I’d be well-rested for class on Friday morning. When the time came, I tried his suggestion for the first couple of weekends. But I soon realized that his plan wasn’t working so well for me. I was losing too much time with my wife and our 3-year-old son.
So, now I leave Alexandria at 5:00am on school Fridays and arrive in Chapel Hill about 30 minutes before classes start. On Saturday, I hit the road the minute classes end, and I’m always able to get back home well before my son turns in for the night.
Each of us has different priorities, and we need a solution that fits with our lifestyle. Through the personal development course, I learned a great deal about myself. I used this knowledge to build a time-management strategy that helps me balance school, work, and family. Spending time with my family is very important to me, and I appreciate the fact that the UNC Weekend MBA requires only one night away from my wife and son every two weeks.”
