"I chose UNC because I wanted a well-rounded college experience, one full of school spirit, top academics, volunteer opportunities and a great sports culture"

“I will be interning with Goldman Sachs in New York this summer within one of their hedge funds. As a Summer Analyst, I will be analyzing companies and industries, developing financial models and learning about their investment strategies. Last summer I worked in New York at a hedge fund, and for the summer of 2010, I volunteered in New York with the Robin Hood Foundation (an innovative grant-maker) and Trinity Wall Street (a large church).”

Career Goals

"Currently, I see myself working in finance or consulting for a few years, after which I plan on returning to school to earn my MBA. Regardless of my specific path, my long-term goal is to use business as a way to make the world a better place. Some of society’s most pressing problems—environmental, health, etc.—could be addressed if entrepreneurs used business as a vehicle to not only make money but to better the world.”

Why I chose UNC

“I chose UNC because I wanted a well-rounded college experience, one full of school spirit, top academics, volunteer opportunities and a great sports culture. My decision was between the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton), Washington University in St. Louis (Olin), and UNC (Kenan-Flagler). Three years later, I know that I made the correct decision. I recommend that all prospective students think carefully about the experience they are looking for in college, not just the name of the institution.”

My experience of the BSBA program

“I have looked at my BSBA as an “all-you-can-eat” buffet: I try everything with the hopes of finding out what I most enjoy. My “buffet” has the following foods:

  • Academics: Between the “general education” requirements and the core business classes, I developed a solid foundation in thinking and knowledge. Recently, I have tried to take as many business electives as possible -- like Derivatives, Fixed Income, and Private Equity – and to get to know my professors on a personal basis. Also, I went on a GLIMPSE (short-term study abroad) program to China last summer, which was fantastic. It combined academics, global immersion, and lots of fun.
  • Extracurricular: There are so many opportunities here. I have explored entrepreneurial opportunities like Carolina Challenge, a venture competition, and Launch the Venture, a business incubator. I have been on the board of the Investment Society, which is a small investment portfolio managed by students. I have also been a part of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Private Equity Fund, the only student-managed fund in the country of the sort.
  • Professional: UNC Kenan-Flagler does a great job of preparing you for recruiting and the business world. To do this, the school hosts prominent speakers, offers great advising and holds events like the Undergraduate Business Symposium. The advisers here know you on a first-name basis, and I have been able to get great support and advice whenever I have questions. UNC also connects you to a global network of thought leaders, and I have attended conferences on UNC’s behalf, such as the London School of Economics Alternative Investment Conference (London), Yale Unite for Sight Social Innovation Conference (New Haven), Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization Conference (Chicago), and Underground Internet Marketing Conference (Washington D.C.).”

The UNC Kenan-Flagler Network

“Alumni love UNC and Kenan-Flagler! They are unbelievably willing to connect with you. I made an effort while here to reach out to prominent alumni and to conduct informational interviews—asking them about their career path, what they do/don’t like about their job and similar questions. The knowledge, connections and support from these alumni have shaped my career path, and many of my friends have had similarly formative experiences by reaching out to alumni. This is a great resource for you at UNC!”

Student Life

“Between the opportunities within UNC Kenan Flagler and those offered elsewhere on campus, I have been able to find many things about which I am passionate. In addition to what I mentioned above, I have been involved with the following:

  • Dating abuse and violence prevention efforts through One Act
  • A “last lecture” format teaching award
  • Entrepreneurial initiatives via the Chancellor’s Student Innovation Team
  • Intramural sports like softball and flag football
There is truly something for everyone here. You can make a big school smaller, but you cannot make a small school bigger.”
