Shaping Leaders, Driving Results

KFBSF Real Estate Funds

The first KFBSF Real Estate Fund was established in 2007 with two objectives in mind, education and the achievement of potential investment returns.  We are now investing in our second Fund.

Tenure as a student manager on the Real Estate Funds provides this select group of student managers a hands-on experience in the operation of a private investment fund.  In addition, they receive a unique opportunity to establish personal and professional relationships with national real estate developers and investors.  As a secondary objective, providing potential investment returns to the Fund’s General Partner and Limited Partners, managers work with the real estate faculty and friends of the Business School to identify and evaluate investment opportunities for the Real Estate Funds and provide continued surveillance of those investments.

Typical portfolio holdings have included Class A multifamily properties in Florida and Texas, residential lots in VA, a renovation of historic row houses and construction of an adjoining tower with new luxury condominiums in Washington DC, the repositioning of an office building in Decatur GA, a vintage retail center in New Jersey, and a portfolio of five industrial properties in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  Projects are diverse geographically and by type; each is analyzed and discussed thoroughly with faculty and advisers before investing.

Managing the Fund

The General Partner of the Real Estate Fund Board of Directors consists of six members, four are from the Kenan-Flagler Business School and two are from outside the school. To oversee and approve each investment of the Real Estate Fund, the Real Estate Fund looks to an Executive Committee formed from three of the General Partners. In addition, a Faculty Committee and an Advisory Committee also guide the student managers in their investment process.

2011-2012 Student Managers

Our student managers are first and second year MBA students and BSBA students who have been chosen through a competitive process.

In the fall of each academic year, students are selected to join the current Fund manager team. These new additions to the team ensure a smooth and continuous process from one team to another from year to year. In the spring, first year students are selected by the current team to begin the next transition of student managers.
