The Career Services team within the MAC Program maintains close relationships with some of the nation’s largest and most respected firms and corporations. We leverage those connections to help our students find opportunities to start their careers off right. To this end, we have a three-step process that helps our students quickly transition from new student to new accountant.
We recognize that, in some cases, students will be seeking specialized opportunities for career advancement within corporate business teams. In these situations, in place of the formal recruiting process listed below, students instead receive customized career coaching that includes introductions to employers and recommendations catered to meet their personal goals.
1. Meet the firms.
The job search starts in June, at the start of the program. Students attend panels with industry experts and networking and social events with key employers, all great opportunities to ask questions and figure out what interest them most. During this time, our Career Services team provides expert coaching on professional communications, interviewing, and resume writing to help students maximize their experience with potential employers.
2. Interview for jobs.
Toward the end of the summer, employers post open positions on a job website exclusive to UNC MAC students. Students review the postings and apply online. In late-September, employers return for on-campus interviews with students. Following the on-campus interviews, selected students are invited for second interviews at the firms’ offices, with travel costs typically covered by the employer. These follow-up meetings usually involve dinner prior to an interview and office tour the following day; a great chance to learn about the firm, its culture, and the city it calls home.
3. Select an offer.
Within days of the site visits, students receive job offers. Many students, in fact, receive multiple offers and need to choose the opportunity that best suits their needs. Throughout the process, the Career Services team is available to help students manage the steps involved and evaluate key decision criteria.
