Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing an MBA program
Do UNC's Executive MBA graduates receive the same degree as traditional fulltime MBAs?
Yes. Graduates of UNC’s Executive MBA (EMBA) Programs receive the same degree as graduates of our traditional Full-time MBA Program.
How are UNC’s Executive MBA Programs different from the Full-time MBA Program?
Executive MBA programs allow experienced professionals to earn an MBA degree while working fulltime. On average, UNC’s Executive MBA students are about eight years older than our Full-time MBAs. With so much experience in the classroom, you’ll learn from other students as well as professors. You will apply your new learning immediately on the job.
The MBA core coursework is similar, but professors in the EMBA Programs adapt their teaching to take advantage of your professional experience. You will take fewer electives than Full-time MBA students. After graduation from the Executive MBA Program, you can take additional elective courses for a nominal fee. This allows you to update your skills and knowledge throughout your career.
Are UNC's MBA for Executives Programs accredited?
UNC Kenan-Flagler's Executive MBA Programs are fully accredited by AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), the premier accrediting agency.
I can't commit to 20 consecutive months. Does UNC offer short-term courses?
UNC Kenan-Flagler's Executive Development programs offer non-degree business courses and seminars lasting a few days to several weeks. These programs are consistently highly ranked by business publications. They prepare executives for leadership positions, enhancing professional skills and career potential.
Which schools offer executive MBA programs?
More than 215 universities and colleges around the world offer executive MBA programs and are members of the Executive MBA Council.
Does UNC Kenan-Flagler offer an online MBA program for working professionals?
Yes. MBA@UNC is an innovative MBA program offered by UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School that continues the school’s tradition of excellence embodied by each of our on-campus programs.
Qualifying for admission
Do you accept transfer credits?
No, we do not accept transfer credits. All students in your class begin the Executive MBA Program at the same time and complete the coursework as a group. This builds your network of trusted colleagues living and working around the globe and lifelong friendships.
Do you require an interview?
Yes. Interviews allow us to understand your qualifications fully, beyond the information in the application. The interview also gives you the chance to learn more about our Executive MBA Programs. We encourage you to schedule your interview when you can visit a class and meet our students and faculty.
I've been out of school for more than ten years. Will I be successful?
We look for seasoned professionals, so most applicants have been away from school for many years. Your GMAT score will indicate whether you will be academically successful. You may want to take continuing education courses to review weak areas (such as statistics, economics, or accounting) before applying. You also need to be proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, including financial and statistical functions.
Are laptops required?
You will need a laptop with Microsoft Office 2000 or later version. As a student, you can buy a Gateway or Lenovo computer at a discount through UNC. The University allows you to use your corporate laptop; however, corporate restrictions may prevent this. You will receive more information about computer requirements upon acceptance.
Adapting to executive MBA student life
How much time does the EMBA Program require outside the classroom?
Most students spend 12 to 20 hours per week in individual study or team meetings, in addition to class time.
How do the students interact when they are not on campus?
Students communicate through the email, conference calls, and face-to-face meetings, when possible.
Do I need to stay with fellow participants during residencies if I live close by?
Yes. Residencies help you develop professional networks and lifelong friendships. You are required to stay with the class during all residencies.
