Daniela Hippler
MBA Class of 2008
My MBA concentration: Corporate Finance
My internship
"After graduation I’ll be employed at the same place I did an internship, Morgan Stanley in New York City. As an intern I helped build financial models, prepared Securities and Exchange Commission documents needed for an IPO and prepared due diligence questions related to a buyout. As an employee, I’ll start out in the investment banking division’s generalist program working with different industry groups."
Background
- Born in Limburg, Germany, came to Chapel Hill from Stuttgart, Germany
- BA in International Business, University of Cooperative Education, Mannheim, Germany, 2002
- Financial analyst in the accounting division of IBM in Stuttgart, 2002-2005
- Promoted to senior financial analyst, created accounting guidelines for IBM’s office in Stuttgart, which is responsible for company operations throughout Europe, 2005-2006
Career goals
"Though I was in the accounting field for a number of years it was not the right fit. I wanted a more customer-oriented job that would allow me to be more communicative while still in the finance area. Investment banking seemed the best choice. I’m really excited about starting my career at a respected company like Morgan Stanley. My hope is to get promoted to vice president there. Ultimately, I’d like to be the CFO of a large firm."
Why I chose UNC
- Collaborative culture
- Diverse and highly qualified student body
- Internationally known programs
- Received a full tuition (Richard H. Jenrette) fellowship

Student life
"My dream was always to study in the United States, but I admit I worried about fitting in. I’ve become a lot more outgoing and confident since being here. You are given so many opportunities to get involved outside classes, and people are friendly. I decided to return the support I was given by becoming a peer counselor for first-year students."
My experience of the MBA program at UNC
- "Good time management skills are critical, especially in the first year, as assignments come at you very rapidly. There’s a steep learning curve. And you must get along with people because you have to coordinate with your team."
- "Faculty members are quality people in every way; they are also very honest. They will tell you to start your job search as soon as you arrive. It’s wise to listen to them."
- "You are recognized for hard work. I was so pleased to be invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society of business students."
The UNC Kenan-Flagler network
"People who come to campus to recruit are mostly alumni, and they’re also the ones who interview you. The time they give says a lot about their belief in the school and its students. This, plus your internship, gives you a built-in network."
