Research, teaching and impact on business
Miguel teaches core leadership and management skills to MBA, Executive MBA and global OneMBAŽ students. She focuses on what business students need beyond their technical expertise or scientific training to advance in their careers. Often, she notes, her more experienced students say they wish they had learned these skills earlier.

"Technical skills get you in the door," she says. "But the higher you go, the more you need the leadership skills. What gets you promoted are your leadership and management skills."

In her OneMBA classes, Miguel explores how well such skills travel around the world. She stresses that certain U.S. management styles and approaches may not work so well in, say, Thailand. So she focuses on fewer skill sets but delves deeper into them.

What makes the UNC Kenan-Flagler student experience different
Miguel says MBA students at UNC are sharp and demanding. At the same time, she notes, the students are quite collegial and team-oriented. "This is not a competitive, cutthroat environment," she says. "It's a cooperative environment."

Something personal
Miguel is a true citizen of the world. She has lived in six countries - the U.S., France, Barbados, Venezuela, Argentina and Turkey. Miguel also cites her "international" family. "I'm married to a Turk, my kids were born in the U.S., my mother is Italian, and my father comes from Spain."
