Carroll Pledges to Continue Faculty Excellence

David Carroll (BSBA ’79), senior executive vice president for Wachovia Corp., has pledged $100,000 to the Dean’s Faculty Fund at UNC Kenan-Flagler.

Carroll’s gift was inspired by a love for the University and for the talented professors — like Rollie Tillman (BSBA ’55) — who he remembers from his own days at UNC. “Rollie Tillman was this larger-than-life guy who had done everything. He went to Carolina and to Harvard, ran the business school, raised money and helped found the entrepreneurship program.  He was and remains a very inspiring role model.”

Through Wachovia’s ongoing relationship with UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Executive Education Program, Carroll recently had the opportunity to take a class from a newer member of the faculty, professor Dan Cable. He was extremely impressed with how Cable’s teaching captivated the 22 seasoned mid- to senior-level executives in the class.

“Dan Cable was energetic, creative, funny and thought-provoking. He could teach anything. I was thinking both from a business and personal perspective that this is the caliber of person I want in front of potential future employees and my son, who will start at UNC in the fall. I hope that what little I can do will help the School attract and keep teachers like him.”

In the academic world, just as in business, there is fierce competition for top talent, and business schools in particular must pay a premium for quality faculty. Gifts to the Dean’s Faculty Fund directly support the best UNC Kenan-Flagler teachers and help recruit new members to their ranks.
