Wagner's Operations Book Selected in Top 25
UNC Kenan-Flagler operations professor Harvey Wagner's book, "Principles of Operations Research," was selected among the top 25 books in the nation that have shaped how operations research is taught and practiced.
The recognition was announced in the August 2002 issue of OR/MS Today.
NSF Grant Awarded to Balasubramanian
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded marketing professor Sridhar Balasubramanian a $500,000 grant. Balasubramanian will research "Virtual Investing-Related Communities (VICs) and Online Investing."
VICs, where people share information and advice pertaining to a company's stocks and financial performance, can be found on Web sites such as Yahoo and Lycos.
"It's a phenomenon that deserves attention, because the Internet is becoming ubiquitous as an information storage and communication medium," he said.
Marketing Science Institute Honors Ratner
The Marketing Science Institute selected marketing professor Rebecca Ratner to participate in its Young Scholars Program. The invitation is extended to only 20 scholars identified as the potential leaders of the next generation of marketing academics.
Shackelford, Collins Share Expertise
Douglas Shackelford, the Meade H. Willis Professor of Taxation, spoke about "The Economics of International Tax Reform" at the Tax Foundation's 65th national
conference in Washington, D.C., in November.
Shackelford also spoke at the annual Tax Policy and the Economy Conference of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 8. Both Shackelford and Interim Dean Julie H. Collins are research associates with NBER.
Collins addressed "Employee Stock Options and Corporate Earnings" at the American Enterprise Institute Nov. 20.
Bettis Named President-Elect of SMS
Rich Bettis, the Luther Hodges Distinguished Professor of Management, was named president-elect of the Strategic Management Society at the annual conference in Paris.
The society publishes the Strategic Management Journal, of which Bettis serves as an associate editor.
UNC Kenan-Flagler Contributes to World Summit
UNC Kenan-Flagler management professor Stuart L. Hart and PhD student Ted London participated in the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa last August.
The World Summit brought together tens of thousands of people to focus the world's attention on issues of environmental and social sustainability.
UNC Kenan-Flagler's Base of the Pyramid Co-Laboratory co-sponsored a workshop in Johannesburg on "Inclusive Entrepreneurship: Opportunities and Challenges."
Rondinelli Leads Afghanistan Seminar
Dennis Rondinelli, the Glaxo Distinguished International Professor of Management, co-chaired a faculty-professional seminar on "Beyond Reconstruction in Afghanistan" at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government Nov. 8.
The seminar examined the lessons from 50 years of international development experience that can be useful in guiding Afghanistan's development over the next decade.
MSI Awards Grant to Morgan
The Marketing Science Institute awarded a $10,000 research grant to marketing professor Neil Morgan.
Morgan will undertake the project, "Marketing Resources, Effort and Capabilities as Drivers of Financial Performance," with colleagues from Indiana University and Illinois State University.
Bayus Awarded MediaBook Grant
Marketing Area Chair Barry Bayus was awarded a UNC knowledgeWorks MediaBook grant based on his new product development research focusing on the phonograph. He was interviewed for a documentary film, "His Master's Voice: The Marvelous Talking Machine," which traces the evolution of the phonograph industry.
