Evans to Chair Baldrige Award Board
John P. Evans, the Hettleman Professor of Business Administration, will chair the board of overseers for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award
(www.quality.nist.gov/index.cfm).
Evans completed the first of a three-year term on that board. He previously served as a judge and senior examiner for the Baldrige Award, which is given by the U.S. president to businesses and organizations that are judged to be outstanding in seven leadership areas.
Evans also received one of the most prestigious awards bestowed by UNC-Chapel Hill - the C. Knox Massey Distinguished Service Award.
Faculty Assume New Leadership Roles
Kenan-Flagler announces new leaders for some of its key programs.
Management professor James W. Dean Jr. was named associate dean of Executive Education, Kenan-Flagler's nondegree programs for executives. Dean recently completed a four-year term as associate dean of the MBA Program, during which he led an innovative redesign of the curriculum, created corporate advisory boards and developed a strong team to guide admissions, student services and career services.
Management professor Robert S. Adler was named associate dean of the MBA Program. In the MBA Program, Adler has coordinated and taught the required ethics course and taught classes and workshops on negotiation, team-building, leadership, business law and consumer protection. He served as associate dean of the School's BSBA Program from 1994-1998. Adler, who has won teaching and research awards, holds a law degree from the University of Michigan.
Kevin Raedy was named associate dean of the Master of Accounting Program. Raedy has been a professor at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro since 1997. He was a former senior accountant at Coopers & Lybrand.
Management professor Mabel Miguel was named the director of the Office of International Programs. Miguel is an expert in leadership and management skills, organizational behavior, multicultural management and global career management. She has led the global immersion elective courses to South America, Central Europe and
East Asia.
NSF Grants Awarded
The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $300,000 grant to management professor Stuart L. Hart, co-director of the Center for Sustainable Enterprise (CSE), and CSE Director of Research Mark Milstein to support "Corporate Initiatives to Serve Poor Markets as a Driver for Innovation and Change: A Longitudinal Study."
NSF awarded a $150,000 grant to operations professor Jayashankar Swaminathan for the project, "Outsourcing Warranty and Repair Services."
Shapiro Elected to Academy of Management Board
Debra L. Shapiro, the Willard J. Graham Distinguished Professor of Management, was elected to the board of governors of The National Academy of Management.
The Academy (www.aom.pace.edu) is a leading
professional association of scholars that publishes The Academy of Management Journal and The Academy of Management Review.
Swaminathan Named Editor of Top Journals
Jayashankar M. Swaminathan, the Benjamin Cone Term Research Professor and chair of the operations, technology and innovation management area, was named associate editor for two top operation journals - Management Science and Operations Research Letters.
The journals are published by INFORMS (www.informs.org).
Lang Named Distinguished Professor
Accounting professor Mark Lang was named the Thomas W. Hudson Jr./Deloitte & Touche LLP Distinguished Professor.
Lang is an expert in the areas of accounting, employee stock ownership, investor relations, corporate disclosure policy and international accounting. The accounting
policy-making board often calls on him to testify about the implications of proposed accounting standards.
