UNC Kenan-Flagler and AACSB International offer seminar on leadership education

Preparing business students for leadership is an increasingly important part of business education. To help address this growing need, the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School and AACSB International (AACSB) are offering a seminar for business schools on how to develop a leadership curriculum.

UNC Kenan-Flagler, a pioneer in leadership development in business education, and AACSB will co-host the Curriculum Development for Leadership seminar Jan. 23-24 in Chapel Hill.

This innovative seminar, which sold out in 2013, will prepare participants to customize leadership development experiences for their students by leveraging their schools' specific capabilities and resources. Attendees will learn how to:

  • Use simulations, exercises and assessments to improve student leadership skills
  • Use extracurricular activities as leadership development opportunities
  • Customize leadership developing experiences for students
  • Explore various types of simulations and coaching programs

Participants also will explore the leadership simulation "Up Your Game," an innovative way to teach leadership capabilities. UNC Kenan-Flagler designed "Up Your Game" as a response to the business community's need for graduates who understand the responsibilities of leadership and can inspire, influence and guide their colleagues.

“Designed to help business schools enhance their leadership programs, this seminar provides effective tools and techniques for institutions to better develop and assess their students’ leadership capabilities,” said John J. Fernandes, president and chief executive officer of AACSB International. “We are privileged to partner with UNC Kenan-Flagler in providing such an important resource and training tool for business schools, and ultimately industry.”

UNC Kenan-Flagler, which launched its Leadership Development initiative in 2005, presented at AACSB’s “Redesigning the MBA Symposium” and curriculum development workshops in 2011 and 2012.

“We are honored to again co-host with AACSB International,” said Mindy Storrie, director of Leadership Development at UNC Kenan-Flagler. “We want to help others learn from our experiences and share best practices from our comprehensive leadership programs.”

In addition to Storrie, UNC Kenan-Flagler facilitators will be Sridhar Balasubramanian, MBA Program associate dean and the Roy & Alice H. Richards Bicentennial Distinguished Scholar and professor of marketing; Alison R. Fragale, Mary Farley Ames Lee Scholar and associate professor of organizational behavior; David A. Hofmann, Hugh L. McColl Scholar in Leadership and professor and area chair of organizational behavior; and Peter Romanella, associate director of leadership development and lecturer.
