UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School

Donors Creating Life-Changing Experiences

Thanks to the generosity of L. Gordon Pfefferkorn Jr. (BSBA ’52), more UNC Kenan-Flagler students are able to study and travel abroad as part of their business education.

In 2009, Pfefferkorn established The June and L. Gordon Pfefferkorn Jr. BSBA Study Abroad Scholarship. This scholarship plays a key role in rewarding a top Kenan-Flagler student with a unique international experience in the school’s study abroad program.

Last year the scholarship enabled Winston-Salem native

Lindsay Furr (BSBA '12, MAC '13) to study abroad at Manchester Business School in the UK.

“Growing up, my days were consumed by books that took me to other worlds, where I was able to experience events I never thought possible,” wrote Lindsay in a letter to the Pfefferkorns before traveling abroad. “This world of creativity and liveliness is now going to be made a reality as I embark on my adventure overseas. Having never been outside the US, I’m excited to partake in a new lifestyle and broaden my cultural experience.”

Lindsay shares more after returning from her trip:

“My time studying at Manchester Business School (MBS) was a life-changing experience, for it allowed me to grow and connect with students from all across the world in a very personal way. Living and working with these international peers, who I can now call friends, gave me a unique insight into different cultures’ take on current world events and their conduction of business.

I originally decided to participate in an exchange program with MBS because I was intrigued by England’s history and eager to travel the countryside. After my time in Manchester, I can’t imagine a better place to study because of the city’s atmosphere and the closeness of everyone participating in the program, which was greatly enhanced by MBS’s study abroad office.

The June and L. Gordon Pfefferkorn Jr. BSBA Study Abroad Scholarship not only allowed me to participate in these invaluable encounters within the classroom, but it also afforded me the opportunity to travel throughout Europe during holidays and gain greater insight into a wider variety of cultures. The five months I spent studying abroad provided me countless memories, which I continue to learn from and reminisce upon today.”

Merit-based study abroad scholarships like this one provide talented, deserving students from a wide variety of backgrounds with financial resources to participate in an international experience. For more information, contact kfbsdevelopment@unc.edu.
