It all starts with a shoe that has a mission to change the world. Bangs Shoes is a for-profit humanitarian brand that supports non-profit organizations built on philosophies of using long-term, sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty and help those in need. Each of the four different shoe styles and colors corresponds to a non-profit that promotes global education, female empowerment, and self-sustainability: D.I.R.T., SOUL Foundation, CHOICE Humanitarian, and Drop In the Bucket. When a shoe is purchased, a portion of the profits is donated to the non-profits. In essence, every sale from these shoes contributes to aiding those who are less fortunate.
I first heard about Bangs Shoes in mid-August after receiving an e-mail from my service fraternity,
Alpha Phi Omega. The timing for this e-mail could not have been more perfect, as I was looking for ways to explore my future career goals, to incorporate business with service. After reading over the vision and job description for Bangs Shoes, I was sold. I have always been involved in service activities, so I was quickly drawn to Bangs’ service mission as a company.
Everything under the mission statement encompassed my beliefs on global service—to truly help those in need, we need to do more than provide hands-outs; we need to find sustainable methods to get people out of poverty in the long term. Bangs Shoes is an amazing opportunity to get a taste of the business world and what it takes to run a successful business.
How did I ever reach such a decision for my career path, you may ask? It all changed with my recent internship opportunity in Limeira, Brazil. I worked at a non-profit organization that provided free preparatory classes to high school students from low-income families. There, I sought ways to improve their program while simultaneously teaching English and mentoring some of the students. I built a connection with these students and really wanted to push for their success in the future.
I’ve always wanted to pursue the business track, but this experience truly made me realize my love and continuous passion to help others, which is why I wish to pursue a career that will allow me to achieve both passions. I quickly applied. After two Skype interviews, I was offered the position to be the Bangs Shoes Ambassador on the UNC Campus. I am now the bridge between UNC and the company. My job is to promote Bangs across campus, raise awareness of our mission, and, sell these shoes.
Currently, I am in the process of forming a team that will help me achieve these goals. This opportunity is great for students interested in pursuing sustainable enterprise, and I highly encourage any student passionate about making a difference to apply to be a team member. Students gain experience in sales, develop teamwork, communication, creativity, and customer service skills, and much more! By working with dedicated and determined individuals, it’s a great way to push yourself to reach your highest potential.
