“Sustainability at Burt’s Bees: Wins & Hurdles” will be the topic of discussion March 22 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School.
The Center for Sustainable Enterprise (CSE) and UNC Net Impact Club at UNC Kenan-Flagler are hosting the event as part of Green Week 2011. It will explore Burt’s Bees’ successes and challenges in developing, measuring and tracking its environmental and employee engagement strategies. Since its beginnings in the 1980s, Burt’s Bees built its business offering “Earth friendly, natural personal care products."
Participating from Burt’s Bees will be sustainability director Yola Carlough and environmental sustainability manager Steve Walker. Carol A. Seagle, CSE director of research and UNC Kenan-Flagler professor of strategy and entrepreneurship, will moderate the discussion.
Carlough joined Burt’s Bees as its first director of sustainability in 2007. She coordinates and monitors its social and environmental sustainability initiatives, and leads the Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation.
Walker leads the operational environmental sustainability and compliance efforts at Burt's Bees. He led the company’s zero-waste-to-landfill initiative, which was achieved at all three of Burt’s Bees’ N.C. facilities in April.
