Build your skills in a safe environment
As you learn the principles of leadership, experiential activities, role plays and simulations give you the chance to try out new leadership behaviors in a low-risk, nonjudgmental environment.
Leadership Days: UNC Kenan-Flagler hosts Leadership Days each fall. You will select from a wide range of interactive workshops with leadership consultants and UNC faculty.
Managerial Simulation: How do you successfully merge two very different cultures? How do you help an employee embrace change? You will practice dealing with stressful, often critical, situations like these with professional role players. Your interaction will be videotaped to give you perspective you’ll never gain on the job. Plus, you will also gain insight from in-depth professional feedback, so you will be prepared when faced with these situations in the real-world.
New Leader Simulation: The New Leader Simulation provides you the opportunity, as a Vice President of a global firm, to demonstrate your leadership to your senior management team and your organization. The exercise simulates what is waiting for you, as new hire, in your email inbox. The exercise will test you in the following skill areas: planning & organizing, written communication, interpersonal sensitivity, problem-solving & decision-making, delegation and empowerment, change management, interpersonal sensitivity, and strategic perspective.
The Game of Leadership: Being able to influence people who do not report to you is one of the hallmarks of leadership. You practice this vital skill in a game where you’ll respond to real-world business situations. Your “performance” will be refereed by a panel of communications experts and fellow participants.
Leadership Immersion: This course offers you a unique opportunity to synthesize and deepen your mastery of core leadership principles through intensive application, experiential learning, individualized feedback, and reflection.
Use your skills to accelerate your career
If you want to test your skills in the real world, you will find plenty of opportunities. These resume builders will help accelerate your career.
Summer internship: What better place to demonstrate your new leadership skills than in the workplace? When you return from your internship, you’ll have opportunities to reflect on your experiences, including updating your development plan with input from an executive coach.
STAR projects: STAR stands for “Student Teams Achieving Results.” You will gain real-world experience by working as consultants to small or medium-size businesses or not-for-profit organizations. It’s a win-win situation: the company gains valuable strategic advice, and you get to apply your learning from the classroom to actual business situations with real consequences.
Student Leadership: The MBA Student Association offers many opportunities for you to assume a leadership role through MBA career clubs, student-led advisory boards, diversity clubs and activity clubs.
