My Background: I am from the western side of Michigan and received my B.A. in business administration from Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids. In my years since college I was an underwriter for commercial loans at a community bank before I moved to Steelcase, a multi-national office furniture manufacturer. At Steelcase, my seven member team conducted financial analysis for our North American plant operations. My wife, Amy, and I have three children.
Career Path: Before coming to Kenan-Flagler I owned and managed a small portfolio of rental houses; between that and my time in community banking I saw several sides of real estate in Grand Rapids. These perspectives, coupled with an excitement for my community whetted my appetite for real estate development. At UNC I am concentrating in real estate with an eye toward downtown revitalization. I have seen some cities with great opportunities and find Durham’s story to be an excellent model for community regeneration.
In addition to conventional study, while I am at Kenan-Flagler I expect to weave more international experiences into my story hitting on areas of significant interest for me. These include: environmental responsibility, entrepreneurship and local community development.
Interests and Hobbies: My primary activities outside of school involve my family, church and community. Raising three children is not just a daily responsibility; it’s also exciting and engaging. My wife and I enjoy cooking new recipes together and visiting state and national parks with our family. Beyond my formal work, I serve on the board of directors for a childcare center and have served on the finance committee of our church, both in Michigan.
