Hanoi, Vietnam – The Kenan Institute Asia officially opened its Hanoi office in order to better serve Vietnam’s development needs. Kenan, a Bangkok-based, regional non-profit development organization, will leverage its 18 years of experience in the areas of business and economic development, education, public health and corporate social responsibility (CSR) to address Vietnam’s social and economic development needs.
At a time when international NGOs are pulling out of Vietnam, Kenan has decided that Vietnam’s impressive level of development meant it was ready for more market-based approaches to development. Since its founding, Kenan has rooted itself in the belief that the private sector can use its resources and expertise to address development challenges that are traditionally thought of as public sector issues. For example, Kenan is implementing a number of major corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects for leading companies such Chevron, Citi, Microsoft, and Boeing, while providing strategic CSR consultancy services to a range of companies, especially in the area of employee and community stakeholder engagement.
“The Kenan Institute Asia has a strong multi-sector development model and acts as a bridge between the private sector, government, academia and the community to ensure that real development needs are met and the impact is lasting.” said Piyabutr Cholvijarn, President of Kenan Institute Asia.
Along with the office opening, Kenan launched a corporate social responsibility (CSR) program. The program will provide training to over 300 Vietnamese CSR officers and executives on practical ways to implement strategic CSR. The training will be delivered in partnership with Vietnam SME Association, the American Chamber of Commerce and other development partners. In addition, Kenan will update the “State of CSR in Vietnam” study, originally conducted in partnership with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
“The Kenan family is very proud of the accomplishments of the Kenan Institute Asia. We are confident that the Institute can extend its experience to develop partnerships with the Vietnamese to address sustainable development issues,” said Thomas S. Kenan III, Trustee, The William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust.
Although Kenan has been active in Vietnam since 1999, conducting projects for in public health and economic development, the new office will allow Kenan to build stronger partnerships with key private sector clients and help Vietnam address its priority development challenges. Currently, Kenan is working with development partners to implement the USAID funded ASEAN Connectivity through Trade and Investment (ACTI), which includes activities to help build SME capabilities in Vietnam’s private sector.
“All of us at Kenan, along with our development partners, are excited about our expansion into Vietnam and look forward to continuing to bring our successful development experience to Vietnam in order to help strengthen Vietnam and the ASEAN region”, said Mr. Cholvijarn.
Kenan approaches key development challenges in the region through an innovative, market-based approach harnessing the resources and expertise of the private sector and the experience and knowledge of the public and civil society sectors to address key issues in business and economic development, education and public health. With services including consulting, project design, management and implementation, training and research, and technical assistance, Kenan has reached over 100,000 direct beneficiaries including students, teachers, principals, public health workers, government officials, corporate employees, managers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, tourist operators, at-risk women, disadvantaged and poor populations, and small business owners.
