Last week, Kenan Institute director, Dr. DeSimone delivered a “call to action” talk at the 2013 North Carolina Science Summit, a signature event of the annual NC Science Festival. Hosted by the Institute for Emerging Issues at NC State University, the Summit provided a forum for science and technology leaders to bring key issues to the attention of business leaders and policymakers with the intent to generate ideas and action to improve North Carolina’s science and technology capabilities, and accordingly, the state’s economy. DeSimone noted significant room for improvement in the area of translating the state’s research strengths into creating companies that could drive economic growth. He emphasized key points about entrepreneurship, convergence research, cross-sector partnerships, optimizing innovation by bringing together diverse perspectives, and the potential for North Carolina to be a leader in both research and manufacturing.
