Stephen J. Appold is a visiting scholar and senior research associate at the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His work places airport city developments in the context of "new industrial places," investigating determinants of firm location decision-making, airport catalytic growth trends, and drivers of airport area land value. His research on airport area governance assesses the efficacy of legal regulations, institutions, and social capital in coordinating investment decisions. At the Kenan Institute, Appold also specializes in the intersection of demography and public policy, focusing on population trends, their economic impact, and their influence on municipal finance.

Appold has received grants from the National Science Foundation, the Carnegie-Bosch Institute, the Center for Southeast Asian Business at the University of Michigan, the National University of Singapore University Research Fund, and the Singapore Housing Development Board.

Prior to coming to the institute, Appold taught at Carnegie-Mellon University, Mississippi State University, and the National University of Singapore. He also taught in the executive education program for labor unionists in the Ong Teng Cheong Institute of Labour Studies (Singapore) and for mid-career social workers in the National Council of Social Service (Singapore). Appold has extensive experience managing large research projects in the United States, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore.

Appold received a Ph.D. from the UNC-Chapel Hill and a bachelor's degree from Stony Brook State University of New York.
