W. Clay Hamner is the Frank Hawkins Kenan Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship.
He is also the chairman of Montrose Capital Corporation, which he founded in 1982. Montrose Capital Corporation has owned or held majority interest in over 40 businesses and made numerous venture capital and real estate investments.
Before founding Montrose Capital, Dr. Hamner was a professor of business at Northwestern University and Duke University, where he was the director for the Center of Entrepreneurial Studies. As a lecturer at Indiana University, he received the Lieber Memorial Outstanding Teaching Award.
He was elected as a fellow of the American Institute of Decision Sciences and the American Psychological Association.
Dr. Hamner has written or edited eight books and published over 50 articles on business.
Dr. Hamner has served on the board of directors of numerous companies including Wendy's International, Inc., Fuqua National Corporation, Triton Group, Ltd., Interstate Johnson Lane, Giga Media, Kleinfeld, Inc., The Pantry, Inc. and Capital Technology, Inc.
Dr. Hamner has served on the boards of visitors at UNC Kenan-Flagler, the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, UNC Management Company, Inc., UNC-Chapel Hill Foundation Investment Fund, Inc., Duke University Medical Center, Duke's Fuqua School of Business and the Indiana University business school.
He received his DBA from Indiana University and his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Georgia.
