Mission | Leadership Team
The mission of the Private Equity Club is to provide club membership the necessary education, exposure to industry leaders, access to alumni and leadership opportunities so that they might secure a career in the Private Equity space following graduation and establish valuable long-term relationships with colleagues and industry professionals.
Ben Berkowitz - President
Prior to pursuing his MBA at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, Ben Berkowitz was an Associate at StoneCreek Capital, a private equity firm located in Irvine, CA. While at StoneCreek, Mr. Berkowitz assisted in sourcing, executing and managing private equity and private debt investments in startup and middle market companies with a particular focus on consumer products and professional services. Mr. Berkowitz came to StoneCreek Capital from Canyon Capital Advisors, a $23B hedge fund located in Los Angeles. Mr. Berkowitz holds a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara where he ran track and cross country. In 2010 he briefly trained for the Marathon Olympic Trials. At UNC, Mr. Berkowitz is pursing concentrations in finance and energy. He will be joining American Capital in New York this summer.
Juliann Rienecker - VP of Finance & Diversity
Prior to pursuing her MBA at the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School, Juliann was a Prime Brokerage Client Service Representative within Morgan Stanley's Institutional Equities division. At Morgan Stanley, she covered dozens of hedge fund clients ranging in size and strategy while assisting them in daily portfolio maintenance and in trading new financial products or global markets. Ms. Rienecker holds a B.A. in Economics from Cornell University where she was also a former record holder on the women's varsity swim team. At UNC, Juliann is pursuing a finance concentration and will be joining Harris Williams & Co. as an investment banking summer associate.
Bryan Beall - VP of Corporate Outreach & Conferences
Prior to pursuing his MBA at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, Bryan Beall was the Director of Operations at Byliner.com, an early-stage technology firm located in San Francisco, CA. While at Byliner, Bryan was primarily responsible for business intelligence, revenue operations, and investor relations. Bryan came to Byliner from the M&A group at CRH, an international building materials group headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. Bryan holds a BBA from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School where he focused on Finance and Organization Management. This summer, Bryan will be interning with the investment banking division of Wells Fargo Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Nick Stommes - VP of Porfessional Development, Treks & Sponsorship
Prior to pursuing his MBA at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, Nick Stommes was an Associate at BB&T Capital Partners, a private equity firm located in Winston-Salem, NC. While at BBTCP, Mr. Stommes evaluated and executed numerous middle market private equity and mezzanine debt investments within the business and media services, education, manufacturing, and value-added distribution industries. Prior to BBTCP, Mr. Stommes was an Analyst in the Consumer Group at Harris Williams & Co., an investment banking firm focused on providing middle market M&A advisory. While at Harris Williams, Mr. Stommes completed numerous transactions in the consumer, retail, and diversified industrial sectors. Mr. Stommes holds a B.S.B. in Finance and Mathematics with a minor in Accounting from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, where he was also a member of the varsity football team.
George Purrington - VP of the Alternative Investment Conference
Prior to pursuing his MBA at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, George Purrington was an Investment Banking Analyst with Eastdil Secured / Wells Fargo Securities. At Eastdil, he created valuation models to project financial results and evaluate strategic and financial alternatives. In this role, Mr. Purrington completed 50+ deals representing $14B+ of advisory transactions as well as debt and equity placements. Before joining Eastdil, Mr. Purrington was an Analyst with Fifth Street Finance, a specialty finance company that lends to and invests in middle market companies in connection with private equity sponsors. Prior to Fifth Street, Mr. Purrington attended Washington & Lee University where he earned a B.S. in Business Administration. For the summer of 2015, Mr. Purrington will join The Halifax Group, a lower middle-market private investment firm in Washington, D.C.
Ed Baran - VP of the Case Competitions
Prior to pursuing his MBA at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, Ed Baran was an Associate at both Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Nomura Securities supporting the Proprietary Structured Credit Trading and High Yield desks, respectively. He worked closely with the trading desks and managed the complete unwind of Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s prop portfolio to comply with Volcker Rule legislation. During his undergraduate study at Babson College, Mr. Baran was a member of the Babson College Fund, a $1.2M student-run equity fund, working alongside MBA candidates. At Babson college Ed Baran was a two-sport varsity athlete, excelling in both ice hockey and lacrosse, while graduating with honors.
Darrell Chin - VP of Marketing, Media & Communications
Prior to pursuing his MBA at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, Darrell was a Senior Associate in the Financial Due Diligence group at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). While at PwC, Darrell performed quality of earnings analyses and debt and debt-like analyses on over 15 transactions across different industries including energy, technology, healthcare, and telecommunication. Prior to his work in Financial Due Diligence, Darrell was responsible for leading and managing audits of Hedge Funds as a Senior Associate at PwC within the Assurance practice. Darrell holds a BSBA from Bucknell University and is a licensed Certified Public Accountant.
Ravi Saini - VP of International Outreach & Alternative Investments
Prior to pursuing his MBA at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, Ravi Saini was an Analyst with the D. E. Shaw Group covering hedge fund operations where he managed the global equities and securities class action team. In this role, Ravi managed operations for six trading units across global equity markets, initiated trading cost optimization projects and also handled over a hundred securities litigation claim filings. Mr. Saini holds a Masters degree in Business Economics from University of Delhi with dual Major in Finance and Statistics along with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Indraprastha University.
Anthony Sifontes - VP of Careers & Alumni Outreach
Prior to pursuing his MBA at the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School, Anthony Sifontes was a Senior Regulatory Consultant with BMO Capital Markets, conducting Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing due-diligence on over 150 institutional asset managers. Anthony transitioned to Regulatory Consulting from a sales position within Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he ranked amongst the top-3 bankers in Manhattan by revenue generated. Before this, Anthony founded both a courier business and a music-education not-for-profit while earning a B.S. in Marketing and Sales Management at Florida State University, eventually selling the courier business to a competitor shortly after graduation.
