UNC Kenan-Flagler study reveals high-potential talent gap

5/20/2013

Talent development professionals report an increase in demand for high-potential talent in their organizations, but many state that the current talent pool does not meet their anticipated future needs, according to a new survey conducted by the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School.

UNC Kenan-Flagler surveyed talent management professionals – those involved in human resources, employee training and organizational development – about the effectiveness of their organizations’ efforts to identify and develop high-potential talent.

A majority of the respondents (84 percent) report that the demand for high-potential talent has increased in the past five years, with growth (74 percent) and competitive pressure (61 percent) driving demand. Despite the increase in demand, nearly half (47 percent) state the current pool of high-potential talent does not meet their anticipated future leadership needs. Only 35 percent of respondents report that the current pool of high-potential talent meets or exceeds their anticipated future leadership needs, while 18 percent don’t know how the current pool aligns with their future leadership needs. In addition, talent development professionals are only moderately confident about their organizations’ ability to fill mission-critical roles. Likewise, they are only moderately confident about their organizations’ ability to develop high-potential talent.

They ranked “strategic thinking/insight” and “drive for results” as the most important competencies used to select high-potential employees. They expect “change leadership” to become one of the most important competencies used to select high-potential employees in the next three to five years.

The survey findings are based on the responses of 1,361 talent development professionals. To view the full survey results, go to http://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/~/media/Files/documents/executive-development/unc-leadership-survey-2013-HiPo.pdf
