Fontaine receives Kenan Institute’s 2012 Tillman award for outstanding leadership

Greg Fontaine
The Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise has awarded the 2012 Rollie Tillman Jr. Award for Outstanding Leadership to Greg Fontaine, a Kenan-Flagler Business School MBA 2012 graduate and Kenan Institute Leadership Fellow.

The Tillman award, named for UNC Kenan-Flagler professor emeritus of marketing Rollie Tillman Jr., the institute’s first director, is given each year to a graduating MBA Leadership Fellow in recognition of superior contributions. The Leadership Fellows are MBA and undergraduate business students who identify and develop programs to connect Kenan-Flagler students with institute research, programs and networking opportunities.

Fontaine was honored at a May 3 dinner with other departing fellows.

“The creativity, passion and initiative demonstrated by these Kenan Institute Leadership Fellows exemplifies the type of globally connected, locally committed leadership that I am confident will shape a better, more sustainable and more competitive world in the future,” Kenan Institute Director John D. Kasarda said.

Fontaine received a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the U.S. Military Academy in 2002 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served eight years as an aviation officer in the 82nd Airborne Division as platoon leader, assistant operations officer and company commander. He completed combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, serving as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, and received the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal and three Air Medals. He leaves UNC Kenan-Flagler’s MBA Program to join Bank of America’s Technology MBA leadership rotation program in Charlotte and focus on cyber security.

Other departing leadership fellows were Laura Israel and Katherine O’Herron, both MBA Class of 2012 graduates, and Nikita Avdiushko and Dexter Blackwell, both undergraduate business Class of 2012 graduates.

Continuing fellows are MBA Class of 2013 students Natalie Birdwell, Nicholas Black, Geordy Johnson, Genny King and Bayard Love and undergraduate business Class of 2013 students Monisha Kumar and Lindsay Newman.
