PhD Admission Requirements
The PhD Program seeks to admit 12-15 students, 2-3 per concentration area, to begin the program in August 2018. The Admissions Committee will review completed applications as they are successfully submitted online. All required application materials and required payment must be received electronically by the application deadlines. These include:

One unofficial transcript from each university attended must be uploaded within the application. Please do not
mail transcripts as part of your admission application; we only accept unofficial uploads for application evaluation. If you are offered admission, one official transcript for each university attended will be required prior to the first day of the fall term.
The completion of a bachelor’s degree or its international equivalent with an accredited institution and a minimum overall average grade of B (cumulative GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) is required.
Letters of recommendation
Three current letters of recommendation from persons qualified to evaluate your academic and professional qualifications are required. You should solicit recommendations from individuals who are familiar with your academic achievement and who can address your potential for success in this particular academic setting. If you have been out of school for a number of years and are unable to contact former professors, letters from other individuals who can address your achievement and potential will be accepted. We advise against using generic letters of recommendation such as those provided by campus career planning and placement offices.
The online application will prompt you to submit the names and email addresses for your three required recommenders. Email invitations will be sent to each recommender once you select 'Save' in the online application with instructions for submitting electronic recommendations. You can also update recommender information and send reminder emails to your recommenders within the online application.
Your Statement of Purpose must be uploaded within your online application. It should briefly discuss:
why you want to earn a PhD degree from UNC Kenan-Flagler;
your professional goals both during the program and post-graduation;
your strengths you will add to both the overall program and your chosen concentration;
any research projects or any independent research in which you have actively participated and how they have influenced your career choice and desire to pursue a PhD.
Resume/Curriculum Vitae (CV)
As part of your online application, you must upload a current resume or curriculum vitae (CV). This should summarize your education, academic achievements, work history and professional accomplishments. It may also include a list of skills, publications, research experiences and other credentials that demonstrate your preparedness to pursue doctorate study.
scores are required for all applicants. Standardized test scores must be official and reported directly by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). They must be current and no more than five years old. Self-reported scores within the application are useful for informal evaluation, but the official report from the ETS must
arrive before final review and admission can be offered.

is required for all international applicants whom English is not the native language. Standardized test scores must be official and reported directly by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Must be no more than two years old with a minimum score of 90.

A waiver request of the English exam is available within the online application if 1) You earned an undergraduate or graduate degree at a U.S. accredited college or university; OR 2) Your total education was conducted in English in a native English-speaking country.
