UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School

Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative Grant

The Global Business Center is home to a grant project, the Obama-Singh 21st Century Knowledge Initiative, directed jointly by UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB).

The UNC-IIMB grant is one of eight awarded in 2013 by the United States-India Educational Foundation to strengthen collaboration and build partnerships between American and Indian institutions of higher education.

UNC Kenan-Flagler and IIMB are partnering on two initiatives to develop knowledge and talent that promotes “sustainability,” defined as economic prosperity, social equity and environmental stewardship:

  • Rising Stars Initiative - A reciprocal faculty-in-residence program for UNC Kenan-Flagler and IIMB junior faculty and doctoral students coupled with an annual mini-grant competition for young faculty across India are designed to bolster the academics' capacity to conduct research and create knowledge in the rapidly evolving discipline of sustainable business strategy.
  • Knowledge Impact Initiative - Educators develop new course materials and share exemplary sustainability curricula. Experts in action-learning are also collaborating on a course through which MBA students from UNC Kenan-Flagler develop their global competencies while providing business consulting to microentrepreneurs in India.
  • Webinars – UNC Kenan-Flagler and IIMB faculty share research and curricular innovations in sustainability with audiences in the U.S. and India. Recordings are archived and publically available to instructors world-wide.
  • Symposium on Advancing Sustainability Education & Research – The program at IIMB will bring together sustainability experts and young scholars from India and the U.S. to discuss research, share best practices in teaching sustainability, and create an action plan for future research and curricular efforts.
