Prospective Student FAQ

What role does the Center for Sustainable Enterprise (CSE) play for MBAs who want to add sustainability to their skill set?

The CSE provides guidance and support for the SE curriculum. We plan speakers and events, We connect students with projects and other out-of-class activities where you can apply new skills. And we provide career support, working with the UNC Net Impact Club and Career Management Center.

Do I have to "declare" a concentration in Sustainable Enterprise or just take a few classes?

It's your choice. You may choose to take a few SE classes. Or you may opt to complete the concentration by taking 4.5 elective credit hours plus MBA 815, Sustainable Enterprise. Many students choose to concentrate in Sustainable Enterprise in addition to another concentration.

Why is Sustainable Enterprise (SE) an "enrichment" concentration?

Sustainable enterprise is not a career discipline — like finance or marketing. Instead, it is a "lens" through which you can look at any company and your role within it. For example, an MBA student looking at finance through the SE lens might pursue careers in socially responsible investing. A student looking at careers in marketing, on the other hand, might look at work in firms doing green marketing, social marketing, or cause marketing. SE can complement any career concentration, and UNC Kenan-Flagler students often complete more than one concentration.

How many students are there in the SE program?

About 20% of the MBA student body chooses to complete the full SE concentration with their degree. More than 200 students — more than one-third of the UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA student body — are in the Net Impact Club, making it one of the most active Net Impact chapters in the country.

What kinds of careers do alumni pursue related to SE?

  • SE consulting

Which companies recruit on campus for SE jobs?

  • SJF Ventures (sustainable venture capital fund)
  • Self-Help (community development lender)
  • Cherokee (brownfields real estate development)
  • CSE Consulting (SE consulting)

How does UNC Kenan-Flagler help students with SE-related career searches?

Beyond the on-campus recruiting support you would expect, we host a number of events to help students with SE career searches.

  • The Winter Sustainable Enterprise Career Fair connects students directly with recruiters for internships and permanent positions. In 2009, almost 40 companies came to campus for this event. It is the longest running and largest recruiting event of its kind at a business school.
  • The SE alumni network helps students actively. We connect students with this supportive network and link you to industry experts through a formal SE Coaching program. For more, see Career Coaching.

What types of projects can I work on with the Center for Sustainable Enterprise?

The CSE helps connect students with projects through:

Faculty and CSE staff can also help a student design a SE project to meet their career needs. For instance, writing a social venture business plan in the Launching the Venture course, or designing an independent study project for credit.

May I contact current students in the SE program to ask about their experiences?
