What do you do in your job?
I am responsible for leading the development of marketing strategy for core potato and appetizer product portfolios across all food service segments. My primary role is to grow our existing products and help to develop new ones. I have led the development of a new product launch process and successfully launched five products utilizing the new process.
What has attending business school at UNC Kenan-Flagler helped you to achieve?
I chose to go to business school primarily to get into a marketing role. To get a higher level marketing job at a national consumer products company, I went back to supplement my sales experience with marketing. At UNC Kenan-Flagler I was able to get a very comprehensive understanding of the different functional areas in a company and how they worked together. Because UNC Kenan-Flagler is very much team focused I learned how to work in a team environment and how to influence people I didn't necessarily have authority over. If you can't work effectively on a team in the business world, I don't think you are going to go far in your career.
How has UNC Kenan-Flagler impacted your leadership skills?
To lead a team you have to understand the dynamics of a team. At UNC Kenan-Flagler I learned how to sit back and observe the different styles of everyone on a team and learn what motivated them and how to get the most out of them. To be an effective leader you have to prove yourself and be willing to get your hands dirty and do the work to gain the confidence and respect of those around you. That is absolutely behavior that was drilled into me at business school.
What has the UNC Kenan-Flagler network meant to your career?
The credentials of the school on my resume carry a lot of weight and have been very critical in helping me continuously move up in my career. I stay in touch with a lot of the folks I went to business school with, and I have gotten informal career advice from those people over the years.
