Why did you pursue an MBA?
“I wanted to get a deeper understanding of managerial accounting, operations, and the macroeconomic factors that affect our business. I felt that an MBA would give me a solid foundation to further excel in my career."
How was the commute from D.C.?
"In my Weekend MBA class, there were several of us from the DC Metro area. Sharing the drive made the commute more enjoyable, and it gave us a chance to talk about the concepts discussed in class with cohorts who were not on our specific teams."
Advice for moms?
“It’s manageable. But you have to have a strong support network. When I started the program, my kids were thirteen, four, and two. I didn't want my studies to affect them, so I began my schoolwork after the little ones went to bed at 8:30. To manage all of my responsibilities, I needed to set realistic expectations at home and at work. Before you add school to an already busy life, be sure to talk with your partner, your children, your colleagues, and your boss, so they understand the time commitment. If everyone is on board, you know you’ll have the support to get it all done. You have to be honest with yourself and those around you from the onset.”
- Strategic Thinking: "The business knowledge and tools I gained have enhanced my strategic thinking and planning on the job."
- Leadership: "There are different leadership styles, and it’s easy to get stuck in one approach. I’ve learned to tweak my style—without compromising who I am—to fit the situation and be a more effective leader."
- Career Advancement: “Pursuing my MBA demonstrated my ability to successfully manage multiple situations: work, family, and EMBA. Just prior to graduating, I was offered a promotion. The UNC MBA was definitely a solid investment.”
