Residency Information
Prospective students must fulfill specific requirements to qualify as North Carolina residents for tuition purposes, and if eligible, must complete and submit a residency form with their application.
Residence Status for Tuition Purposes
- A residency form must be completed by every applicant to UNC-Chapel Hill claiming eligibility for in-state tuition. It is not necessary to submit the residency form with the application for admission to the MBA Program. A residency form can be submitted later, after admission.
- North Carolina law (G.S. 116-143.1) requires that "To qualify as a resident for tuition purposes, a person must have established legal residence (domicile) in North Carolina and maintained that legal residence for at least 12 months immediately prior to his or her classification as a resident for tuition purposes." One year prior to submitting a residency application, a student must have demonstrated his or her intent to remain a North Carolina resident, and that the student did not come to the state solely to attend school.
- If you think you qualify for in-state tuition rates, you should download and complete the appropriate residency application form. Residency application forms are available in PDF at the Office of the Registrar web site: http://regweb.unc.edu/residency/index.php.
MBA applicants and students should complete the paper forms and submit them to MBA Admissions, Kenan-Flagler Business School, Campus Box 3490, UNC, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3490.
- Which residency application form should you complete? If you have lived in North Carolina for the past three years or longer without interruption, download and complete the Short Form for Graduate and Professional Students. If you have lived in North Carolina for fewer than three years, submit the Long Form for Graduate and Professional Students. Additional forms apply for married students and for those who are not U.S. citizens. To learn more, please review the information at http://regweb.unc.edu/residency/index.php.
