North Carolina Residency

Under state law, North Carolina residents are eligible for a lower tuition rate to state universities, including The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (the University). In order to qualify as a resident for tuition purposes, a person must have established legal residence (or domicile) in North Carolina and maintained that legal residence for at least twelve (12) months prior to his or her classification as a resident for tuition purposes. Each in-state student must demonstrate evidence of his or her intent to remain a North Carolina resident - that the student did not come to the state solely to attend school.

Each student is classified as an out-of-state resident UNTIL and UNLESS they have submitted a residency application that resulted in a "resident" reclassification.

Applicants for admission

All applicants will have an opportunity to apply for residency status at the time they complete the electronic MBA Admissions application. The online MBA application includes preliminary residency questions on the personal information page(s). If a residency classification cannot be made based on this information, you will be prompted to submit the residency application form. A copy of the residency application form can be found on the University Registrar's Office Residency webpage.

We encourage you to provide as complete an MBA Admissions application as possible. Residency reclassification is an evidence-based process. Your residency application will be considered incomplete and your residency classification cannot be changed without both the residency application form and supporting documentation submitted to our office. More details on documents frequently provided in support of a residency application are available on the Registrar's Residency webpage.

Current students

Current students may apply for residency reclassification for any term during which they are enrolled by submitting the residency application form directly to the MBA Admissions Office.
