Minorities

We recognize the importance of diverse voices in the MBA learning experience. We work to enroll talented people from all ethnic groups. Over the past several years, minority students have made up about 14% of the domestic students in each class and about 10% of the class overall. This diversity of experiences and perspectives is integral to the MBA program success.

Kenan-Flagler supports a number of organizations in an effort to increase the representation of minorities in MBA programs and business leadership as a whole.

Alliance of Minority Business Students

The Alliance of Minority Business Students is a student-organization that promotes academic and career success among the diverse student body at Kenan-Flagler. The group specifically seeks members who are committed to increasing the diversity of underrepresented minorities, including African Americans, Hispanic and Latino Americans, and Native Americans/American Indians, in the MBA landscape.

AMBS works closely with faculty, alumni and corporate partners, hosting a variety of activities throughout the year including:

  • Inside Kenan-Flagler, an experiential weekend for prospective minority MBA students
  • Diversity career fair preparation workshops in conjunction with the Career Management Center
  • The Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration
  • The Harambee Fashion Show fundraiser and Habitat for Humanity service day
  • Mentoring minority students in the undergraduate business program (BSBA)

The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management (CGSM)

UNC is a proud member of The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management, an alliance of American business schools and some or our country’s top corporations, is to enhance diversity in business education and leadership by helping to reduce the serious underrepresentation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans in both our member schools’ enrollment and the ranks of management.

Member schools coordinate with the Consortium to achieve this mission by recruiting qualified U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents who can demonstrate a commitment to the Consortium’s mission and can best assist the Consortium in pursuing this mission. Students interested in applying through the Consortium will benefit from a consolidated application process and application fee structure as well as an opportunity to earn the full-tuition merit-based Consortium fellowship.

Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT)

The mission of the MLT MBA Preparation Program (MBAP) is to help young professionals apply successfully to leading graduate business schools. Over a 12-month period culminating in submission of their applications to business school, participants receive one-on-one coaching from experienced MLT staff and current and former MBA admissions officers, as well as attend seminars focusing on key elements of the application process. Specific areas of emphasis include: GMAT preparation, individual work-plan development and execution to address perceived strengths and weaknesses, school research and selection, industry research and career guidance, writing skills, interviewing skills, financial planning, and application/essay strategy.

MBA JumpStart

MBA JumpStart is a targeted, pre-matriculation forum through which consulting and financial services firms can identify, educate and recruit minority talent at top-tier MBA programs. MBA JumpStart was created to address the lack of diversity and under representation of minorities in the consulting and financial services industries. The program strives to bridge the gap between minority talent entering top business schools and firms actively seeking to increase minority representation.

NBMBAA/NSHMBA

We support the missions of the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) and the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA). Both groups are comprised of minority MBAs, business professionals and MBA students. Many of our students attend competitions and conferences sponsored by these groups.
